LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's soccer team was pushed to the limit Sunday evening, but the Golden Eagles staged a tremendous comeback to keep its lengthy unbeaten streak alive.
For more than 80 minutes, the Golden Eagles threw everything they could at Cal Poly Humboldt goalkeeper Adrian Gallardo, only to see great save after great save keep them in a 1-0 hole. No. 2 Cal State LA (8-0-2, 3-0-1 CCAA), though, got a pair of late goals from
Rene Cortez and
Andrew Portis to stun the 'Jacks, 2-1, in University Stadium.
The Golden Eagles stretched their unbeaten streak to 24 game dating back to last season with a victory that did not seem to be in the cards until very late.
Cal State LA had an incredible 16 shots in the second half, but the first 14 were either saved by Gallardo or sent high or wide of the goal. Gallardo made a number of point-blank saves on headers in the box as the Golden Eagles sent cross after cross into the box trying to get the equalizer.
The Golden Eagles were forced to chase the game after Cal Poly Humboldt (2-6-3, 1-3-1 CCAA) struck for a goal in the 15th minute of the game on a quick counterattack. Dylan Vega made a beautiful pass to Marcus Abdel-Malek, who got it in stride and made a great shot to the far post for the 1-0 lead.
That lead stood up, somewhat miraculously, until the 82nd minute when
Rene Cortez headed in a cross from
Felix Alverdale to finally break the shutout bid.
Then, less than four minutes later, Portis headed in a cross from
Geovanni Antuna to give the Golden Eagles the lead. Portis scored his fourth goal of the season and picked up his second game-winner in as many games. All four of his goals have been game-winners.
After taking the lead, Cal State LA was able to hold Cal Poly Humboldt without a shot over the final five minutes of the game.
Cal State LA wound up with a 21-3 advantage in shots and a 10-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Tommaso Belli, Cortez,
Joel Green and Portis each had three shots for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State LA will return to action with a first-place showdown against Cal Poly Pomona on Thursday at 7 p.m. in University Stadium.
