No. 2 Golden Eagles Record Shutout Over Seawolves

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's soccer team earned another hard-fought California Collegiate Athletic Association victory Friday against Sonoma State.

The Golden Eagles got a goal early in the second half from Andrew Portis and edged the Seawolves, 1-0, in University Stadium. No. 2 Cal State LA (7-0-2, 2-0-1 CCAA) moves into a share of first place in the CCAA with the win and extended its unbeaten streak to 23 dating back to last season.

The Golden Eagles had to survive playing the final 20 minutes of the game short-handed after a straight red card was issued. The Seawolves had four shots over the final 20 minutes, including a pair that were saved by Diego Bravo in the 74th minute.

After a scoreless first half, the Golden Eagles got the only goal they would need when Portis notched his team-leading third of the season. He The only goal of the game came courtesy of Portis, who headed in a cross from Luke Varav in the 49th minute. The assist was Varav's second of the season.

Sonoma State had an 11-10 advantage in shots, while Cal State LA had an 8-4 edge in corner kicks. The Golden Eagles had a 5-0 edge in the first half.

Felix Alverdale had a team-high four shots, including three on goal. He had two beautiful point-blank attempts denied by Sonoma State goalkeeper Jack Chapman. Chapman had five saves in the match.

Bravo made a pair of saves for the Golden Eagles.

Alejandro Zarate had a match-high six shots for the Seawolves, including the two that were saved by Bravo.

Roei Mordechay had a pair of shots for the Golden Eagles.

Cal State LA will return to action on Sunday with a 5 p.m. match against Cal Poly Humboldt.
