LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team was unable to shake its recent struggled and dropped a heartbreaker at home Saturday to Cal State San Bernardino.
The Coyotes hit a pair of free throws to erase a one-point deficit down the stretch and held off the Golden Eagles, 73-72, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association contest. Cal State LA (5-7, 2-5 CCAA) dropped its fourth straight game and its third straight in conference play.
The Golden Eagles had a 72-66 lead with 1:43 to go, but were outscored, 7-0, down the stretch.
Alicia Jones led four Golden Eagles in double figures with 16 points, while
Lily Buggs had 15 points and seven rebounds.
Nicole Flennaugh had 11 points and six assists and
Donja Payne had 10 points and a season-high 14 rebounds.
Destiny Jackson had a game-high 18 points for the Coyotes (6-6, 4-3 CCAA), including what turned out to be the game-winning free throws with six seconds to go. Jaida Jackson had 15 points and Samantha Henley had 14 points.
Gabriella Rones and
Amaya Fuentes had eight points each.
Cal State LA shot 37.5 percent for the game (24-of-64) and was 9-of-25 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were also just 15-of-27 from the free-throw line. Cal State San Bernardino shot 39.4 percent for the game (26-of-66) and was 9-of-22 from 3-point range. The Coyotes were 12-of-14 from the free-throw line.
Both teams had 42 rebounds and Cal State LA had 13 turnovers to 18 for the Coyotes.
Cal State LA led 14-11 after one quarter and opened up a 23-13 lead in the second period after a 3-pointer by Flennaugh. A Buggs free throw gave the Golden Eagles a 32-22 lead later in the period and the Golden Eagles settled for a 36-30 halftime lead.
A 3-pointer by Fuentes gave the Golden Eagles a 39-30 lead early in the third quarter, but Cal State San Bernardino went on a 17-0 run to take a 46-39 lead. A 3-pointer by Jones stopped the run and a layup and two free throws by Buggs tied it at 46-46. A 3-pointer by Flennaugh broke a 50-50 tie, but the Coyotes scored the final three points of the period to even the score after three quarters, 53-53.
The Coyotes scored the first five points of the fourth quarter to take a 58-53 lead, but a pair of free throws by Buggs and a 3-pointer by Buggs tied it with 7:52 to go. The Coyotes took another six-point lead, but 3-pointers by Buggs and Flennaugh tied it again at 64-64 with five minutes to play.
Cal State LA then took a six-point lead after a 3-pointer by Rones, a layup by Jones and an offensive rebound basket by Payne with 1:43 to go. The Coyotes then scored the final seven points of the game to secure the win.
Cal State LA will return to action on Thursday with a road game at Cal State East Bay.
