HAYWARD -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team suffered another heartbreaking California Collegiate Athletic Association defeat on Thursday, this one at Cal State East Bay.
The Golden Eagles never trailed in regulation, but Cal State East Bay rallied from a 14-point, fourth-quarter deficit to send the game into overtime and got the game-winning basket with 1.9 seconds remaining in the extra period to stun Cal State LA, 73-72, in Pioneer Gym. Cal State LA (5-8, 2-6 CCAA) dropped its fifth straight game, all in conference play, with three of those losses coming by one point.
The Golden Eagles took a 72-71 lead with six seconds to play in overtime on a free throw by
Nicole Flennaugh, but the Pioneers got a driving layup by Jaela Richardson to win it.
Cal State LA held a 60-46 lead entering the fourth period, but was outscored, 23-9, in the final quarter and both teams had trouble scoring in the overtime period with the Pioneers holding a 4-3 edge. With the Golden Eagles trailing for the first time in the game, 71-69, Flennaugh hit a jumper with 42 seconds left to tie it and got one free throw with six seconds to go to account for all of Cal State LA's points in overtime.
Lily Buggs had a season-high 22 points and 10 rebounds before fouling out late in the fourth quarter. Flennaugh had 14 points.
Richardson had 22 points to lead the Pioneers (6-9, 4-4 CCAA), while Payton Sterk had 19 points.
Alicia Jones and
Gabriella Rones had 12 points each for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State LA shot 36.8 percent for the game (25-of-68) and was 7-of-22 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles, though, were just 5-of-21 in the fourth quarter and overtime and just 1-of-6 from 3-point range. Cal State LA was 15-of-22 from the free-throw line. Cal State East Bay shot 43.9 percent for the game (29-of-66), including 60 percent in the fourth quarter (9-of-15) to get the game into overtime. The Pioneers were 2-of-13 from 3-point range and 13-of-24 from the free-throw line.
The rebounding battle was even, 44-44, and Cal State LA had 28 turnovers to 27 for Cal State East Bay.
Cal State LA seemed to have things in hand before a late scoring drought. The Golden Eagles led by seven points in the first quarter, 21-14, before settling for a 21-19 lead after one quarter.
A 3-pointer by Flennaugh gave the Golden Eagles a 41-31 lead in the second quarter, but the Pioneers scored the final five points to make it 41-36 at halftime.
A jumper by Buggs, a free throw by Rones, 3-pointer by Flennaugh and four free throws by Buggs stretched a 50-46 lead to 60-46 entering the fourth period.
Cal State LA enjoyed a 64-50 lead with 7:27 to go after a basket by Buggs and still had a 69-58 lead with three minutes to go after a basket by Jones. The Pioneers, though, scored the final 11 points of regulation to send the game into overtime.
The Golden Eagles gave up a basket with 3:50 to go in overtime and didn't score in the extra period until Flennaugh's basket with 42 seconds to go. The Pioneers didn't score after their opening basket until Richardson's late game-winner.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a game at San Francisco State.
