SAN FRANCISCO -- Cal State LA's women's basketball finally had things go its way on Saturday in a much-needed victory at San Francisco State.
The Golden Eagles put an end to a frustrating five-game losing streak that included three one-point losses with an 84-58 win over the Gators in a California Collegiate Athletic Association contest in Main Gym. Cal State LA (6-8, 3-6 CCAA) earned a split of its conference road trip.
Freshman
Sofia Fidelus had her best game of the season to lead the way. She was magnificent on Saturday, scoring a season-high 21 points, including her first two 3-pointers of the season. She also had a season-high five rebounds and collected a season-high four assists.
Lily Buggs had another double-double with 14 points and a game-high 15 rebounds, while
Nicole Flennaugh had 12 points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Alexsandra Alvarado had 20 points for San Francisco State (3-11, 2-7 CCAA), while Sage Bridges-Bey had 14 points.
Nevaeh Asiasi had seven points for the Golden Eagles, while
Olivia Hodges had six points and six rebounds and
Gabriella Rones had six points, courtesy of a 2-of-3 performance from 3-point range.
Cal State LA shot 41.3 percent for the game (31-of-75) and was 7-of-18 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were also 15-of-18 from the free-throw line. San Francisco State shot just 27 percent for the game (17-of-63) and was 7-of-22 from 3-point range. The Gators were 19-of-25 from the free-throw line.
Cal State LA had a 50-44 rebounding edge and committed 17 turnovers to 25 for the Gators.
The Golden Eagles got contributions from all 14 players on the trip and had a 48-9 advantage in bench points.
After leading by just two points, 34-32, with four minutes remaining in the second quarter, the Golden Eagles scored the final seven points of the first half and then used a 19-0 run in the third quarter to take command. Cal State LA had a 70-46 lead entering the fourth period and never looked back.
The Golden Eagles led by just two points, 21-19, after one quarter and trailed briefly in the second period, 22-21, before a go-ahead 3-pointer by Fidelus. Cal State LA led by just two points, 34-32, before a free throw by Asiasi, a layup by Asiasi, a layup by Buggs and a jumper from
Iyanna Lamb gave the Golden Eagles a 41-32 lead at halftime.
After San Francisco State pulled to within 41-36 in the third period, the Golden Eagles scored the next 19 points to extend their lead. Buggs started the run with a free throw,
Amaya Fuentes scored on a layup, Buggs hit two more free throws, Flennaugh hit a jumper, Asiasi made a layup, Flennaugh hit a 3-pointer, Fidelus hit a pair of free throws, Flennaugh converted a three-point play and Fidelus hit a jumper to give the Golden Eagles a 60-36 lead.
Cal State LA took its biggest lead at 68-37 following an offensive rebound and basket by
Donja Payne and the Golden Eagles settled for a 70-46 lead after three quarters.
Cal State LA led by at least 20 points for the remainder of the game.
Cal State LA will return to action on Thursday with a big home game against Chico State.
