Golden Eagles Earn A Big Win Over Chico State

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team picked a great time for its most impressive win of the season.

The Golden Eagles put it all together in a 92-68 win over second-place Chico State Thursday night in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game in University Gym. Cal State LA (7-8, 4-6 CCAA) recorded its second straight win with a high-octane offensive showing. Cal State LA led 47-34 at halftime and was able to hold off repeated second-half challenges by the Wildcats (11-5, 7-3 CCAA).

Lily Buggs had another double-double with a season-high 23 points and 11 rebounds to lead five Golden Eagles in double figures on a night when she ecliped 1,000 career points. She now stands at 1,012 after going 10-of-16 from the floor and hitting 3-of-6 from 3-point range. Alicia Jones and Sofia Fidelus had 15 points each for the Golden Eagles.

Jordan Allred had an outstanding game for Chico State and led all scorers with 28 points. She was 11-of-16 from the floor and a sizzling 6-of-7 from 3-point range.

Donja Payne had 12 points and six rebounds for the Golden Eagles, while Nicole Flennaugh had 11 points and played an outstanding game on the defensive end.

Cal State LA shot 56.3 percent for the game (36-of-64) and hit 9-of-18 attempt from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 11-of-19 from the free-throw line. Chico State shot 44.6 percent (25-of-56) and was 9-of-21 from 3-point range. The Wildcats were 9-of-17 from the free-throw line. Cal State LA had a 36-32 rebounding edge and committed only 10 turnovers to 15 for Chico State.

The Golden Eagles trailed as late as 16-14 in the first quarter before a 3-pointer by Buggs gave them the lead for good. A pair of free throws by Jones made it 19-16 and, after a Chico State basket made it 19-18, Fidelus and Nevaeh Asiasi scored baskets and Payne converted a 3-point play to give the Golden Eagles a 26-20 lead after one quarter.

Buggs scored the first four points of the second quarter to give the Golden Eagles first double-digit lead and another three-point play by Payne gave the Golden Eagles their biggest lead of the first half at 46-31. A free throw by Flennaugh gave the Golden Eagles a 47-34 lead at halftime.

Chico State quickly the deficit to nine points, 47-38 early in the third quarter, but a layup by Jones, a free throw by Jones, four straight points by Buggs, a 3-pointer by Fidelus and a layup by Lamb sparked a 12-3 run and pushed the lead to 59-41. A 3-pointer by Flennaugh made it 69-50 and the Golden Eagles took a 69-51 lead into the fourth quarter.

Cal State LA held leads as large as 26 points in the fourth quarter and finished strongly for its biggest win of the season.

Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a home game against Cal Poly Humboldt.
