Golden Eagles Fall To Broncos In CCAA Battle

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team was unable to ring in the new year with a victory Thursday night in a California Collegiate Athletic Association contest against Cal Poly Pomona.

The Golden Eagles struggled offensively and shot just 27 percent in a disappointing 65-52 loss to the Broncos in University Gym. Cal State LA (5-6, 2-4 CCAA) dropped its third straight game.

Lily Buggs had 11 points and a season-high 16 rebounds for the Golden Eagles, while Nicole Flennaugh had 10 points and four assists. Alicia Jones had eight points and six rebounds.

Kalaya Buggs had a game-high 20 points, including a couple of big baskets in the fourth quarter to stymie Cal State LA comeback attempts. Sydney Nelson had 14 points, five rebounds and four blocks.

Ronyae Jackson and Amaya Fuentes had seven points each for the Golden Eagles, while Iyanna Lamb had four points and two assists.

Cal State LA made just 17-of-63 from the floor and was just 8-of-28 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles also struggled a bit from the free-throw line, where they were 10-of-18.

Cal Poly Pomona shot 40.4 percent for the game (21-of-52) and was 6-of-13 from 3-point range. The Broncos were 17-of-26 from the free-throw line. The Broncos had a 44-42 rebounding edge and both teams had 15 turnovers. Cal Poly Pomona also had 10 blocks in the game, while the Golden Eagles had six.

The Golden Eagles surrendered the first eight points of the game and never really recovered. Fuentes got the Golden Eagles' first basket halfway through the first quarter and Jackson hit a 3-pointer to make it 8-5. A 3-pointer by Buggs got the Golden Eagles to within 10-8 and a basket by Jones made it 12-10, but the Broncos scored the last seven points of the quarter to take a 19-10 lead after one period.

Cal Poly Pomona scored the first four points of the second quarter to take a 23-10 lead. Gabriella Rones and Fuentes hit 3-pointers and Buggs made a steal and basket to get the Golden Eagles within seven points at 26-19 and a 3-pointer by Jones kept the margin at 28-22. Cal State LA got as close as 31-26 in the final minute of the first half and were down 34-26 at the break.

The Golden Eagles trailed by as many as 16 points in the third quarter, but closed the period with an 11-1 run to pull to within 47-41 entering the final period. Lamb started the run with a 3-pointer, Buggs hit a pair of free throws, Lamb hit a free throw, Buggs hit two more free throws, Jackson hit a free throw and Donja Payne scored on an offensive rebound to get the Golden Eagles close.

Jones scored on a layup to open the fourth quarter and make it 47-43 and a 3-pointer by Flennaugh made it 50-47 with seven minutes to go. Jackson kept the margin at four points at 53-49 with six minutes left, but the Broncos scored nine straight points to break the game back open. Flennaugh hit another 3-pointer to make it a 62-52 margin, but that was the last basket of the game for the Golden Eagles.

Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a home game against Cal State San Bernardino.
