POMONA -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team has had its share of maddening losses already this season and the Golden Eagles suffered another one Saturday against Cal Poly Pomona.
The Golden Eagles endured a nightmarish fourth-quarter and fell to the Broncos, 79-76 in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game in Kellogg Arena. Cal State LA (9-9, 6-7 CCAA) led by 11 points with eight minutes remaining and by six points with 44 seconds to go, only to see Cal Poly Pomona (13-5, 9-4 CCAA) make all the big plays down the stretch to complete a regular-season sweep.
Cal State LA had a four-game winning streak snapped and suffered another close conference loss. The Golden Eagles had already dropped three conference games by one point and Saturday's loss was essentially the same as the Broncos' final two points came with no time remaining on the clock.
Gabriella Rones had a season-high 24 points for the Golden Eagles and was a sparkling 6-of-8 from 3-point range.
Lily Buggs had 18 points and six rebounds in another strong showing.
Kalaya Buggs led all scorers with 35 points, including 16 in the fourth quarter and a pair of go-ahead free throws with three seconds remaining. Sydney Nelson added 18 points.
Alicia Jones and
Iyanna Lamb had nine points each for the Golden Eagles, while
Nicole Flennaugh had six points, three rebounds and four assists.
Cal State LA shot 47.4 percent for the game (27-of-57) and was 11-of-23 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 11-of-14 from the free-throw line. Cal Poly Pomona shot 48.3 percent (28-of-58) and was 9-of-17 from 3-point range. The Broncos were 14-of-23 from the free-throw line. Cal Poly Pomona had a 38-28 rebounding edge and both teams committed 19 turnovers.Â
Cal State LA led by as many as six points in the opening quarter before settled for a 21-20 lead entering the second period. The Golden Eagles then got three straight 3-pointers from Rones to build a 34-25 lead before settling for a 36-31 halftime lead.
The Golden Eagles then led for the entire third quarter and took a 60-51 lead into the final period after a late 3-pointer by Lamb.
A layup by Buggs gave the Golden Eagles a 64-54 lead and a 3-pointer by Lamb extended the lead to 67-56 with eight minutes left. The Broncos, though, went on an 11-0 run to take their first lead of the second half, 68-67.
Cal State LA responded with a layup from Rones to regain the lead and, after Cal Poly Pomona took a 70-69 lead, the Golden Eagles got a go-ahead 3-pointer by Rones, a pair of free throws by Rones and a layup from Jones to take a 76-70 lead with 44 seconds to go.Â
The game, though, got away from the Golden Eagles as Cal Poly Pomona scored the final nine points to win the game.
Cal State LA will return to action on Thursday with a road game at Stanislaus State.
