Golden Eagles Pick Up Big Road Win At Stanislaus

TURLOCK -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team used some clutch play in the second half to record an important California Collegiate Athletic Association win at Stanislaus State.

The Golden Eagles had five players score in double figures and outscored the Warriors, 47-32, in the second half of an 81-69 California Collegiate Athletic Association win in Fitzpatrick Arena. Cal State LA fought back from a 37-34 halftime deficit to pull into a crowded fourth-place tie in the CCAA. Cal State LA (10-9, 7-7 CCAA) and Stanislaus State (12-12, 7-7 CCAA) are two of six teams tied for fourth in the conference with eight games remaining.

The top six teams will qualify for the CCAA Tournament.

Gabriella Rones continued her fine play with 18 points, including three 3-pointers and a 5-of-6 showing at the free-throw line. Olivia Hodges also scored 18 points, her new career high, to go along with nine rebounds. She was 10-of-14 from the free-throw line.

Joia Armstrong led three Warriors in double figures with 17 points, while Asha Walker had 15 points.

Lily Buggs had 14 points and nine rebounds, finishing just one rebound shy of another double-double. Nicole Flennaugh had 12 rebounds and Sofia Fidelus had 10 points in 12 productive minutes. She hit both of her 3-point attempts.

Cal State LA shot 38.1 percent for the game (24-of-63) and was 8-of-30 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 25-of-34 from the free-throw line, including 18-of-23 in the fourth quarter while holding off the Warriors. Stanislaus State shot 41.3 percent (26-of-63) and was 6-of-17 from 3-point range. The Warriors were 11-of-17 from the free-throw line.

Cal State LA did a good job on the boards and had a 46-36 rebounding edge. The Golden Eagles committed 19 turnovers to 20 for the Warriors.

Cal State LA got a 3-pointer from Flennaugh and a pair of free throws by Buggs to take a 14-6 lead and got baskets from Amaya Fuentes and Fidelus to close out the quarter with a 23-18 lead after one quarter.

The Golden Eagles, though, lost the lead and ultimately fell behind by eight points, 33-25, with six minutes left in the half. Nevaeh Asiasi stopped the Stanislaus surge with two straight baskets and Hodges scored on a layup to close the gap to 33-31. A 3-pointer by Rones made it 35-34 and the Golden Eagles trailed at halfftime, 37-34.

Cal State LA fell behind by five points in the opening seconds of the third quarter, but Rones hit a 3-pointer to get the Golden Eagles close and a pair of 3-pointers by Fidelus tied it at 42-42 and 45-45. After a free throw by Hodges got the Golden Eagles within one at 47-46, Rones gave the Golden Eagles the lead for good with a basket. Fidelus and Hodges added baskets to open up a 52-47 advantage. Cal State LA closed the quarter with free throws by Hodges and Flennaugh and a 3-pointer by Rones to take a 59-51 lead into the final quarter.

The Golden Eagles had their lead cut to one point at 61-60, but put the game away with a 9-0 run. A three-point play by Hodges started the run and was followed by two free throws from Buggs, a free throw by Hodges, a layup by Rones and another free throw by Hodges.

Cal State LA led by at least six points the rest of the way, but Rones, Hodges and Flennaugh were a combined 6-for-6 from the free-throw line down the stretch to put the game away.

Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday at Cal State Monterey Bay.
