Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Golden Eagles Continue Their Upward Climb With Win

SAN BERNARDINO -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team opened the second half of California Collegiate Athletic Association play the same way it finished the first.

With a win.

The Golden Eagles stretched their winning streak to four games in a row with an impressive 62-51 win over Cal State San Bernardino Thursday night in Coussoulis Arena. Cal State LA (9-8, 6-6 CCAA) avenged an earlier loss to the Coyotes that was part of a frustrating five-game losing streak.

The Golden Eagles have answered that slide with a four-game winning streak that has put them right back in the mix of the CCAA race. Cal State LA has climbed into a five-way tie for fifth place, one game out of fourth and just two games out of second.

Lily Buggs continued her outstanding play and led the Golden Eagles with 17 points and 12 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season and her fourth in the past five games.

Gabriella Rones had 16 points and hit 4-of-9 from 3-point range, while Alicia Jones also reached double figures with 10 points.

Mia Dufresne had 14 points and 15 rebounds, while Jaida Johnson had 13 points and five steals.

Olivia Hodges had a season-high 10 rebounds to go along with six points for the Golden Eagles, while Sofia Fidelus also had six points.

Cal State LA took control of the game with a huge second-quarter edge when the Golden Eagles outscored the Coyotes, 18-5. That gave the Golden Eagles a 32-17 halftime lead and they led by as many as 18 points while securing the big road win.

Cal State LA shot 38.5 percent for the game (25-of-65) and was 9-of-22 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles did struggle at the free-throw line and made only 3-of-8 from the free-throw line. Cal State San Bernardino shot just 28.2 percent (20-of-71) against Cal State LA's hustling defense. The Coyotes were just 1-of-15 from 3-point range and 10-of-21 from the free-throw line.

The Golden Eagles had a 52-47 rebounding edge and committed 23 turnovers to 19 for the Coyotes.

A 3-pointer by Rones gave the Golden Eagles a 13-10 lead and they never looked back. A free throw by Hodges gave the Golden Eagles a 14-12 lead after one quarter. Buggs opened the second quarter with a pair of layups to give the Golden Eagles an 18-12 lead and a 3-pointer by Buggs, a jumper by Rones and a 3-pointer by Rones extended the lead to 26-14. Two more 3-pointers by Rones gave the Golden Eagles a 32-16 lead and Cal State LA settled for a 32-17 halftime lead.

Jones opened the third quarter with a 3-pointer to make it 35-17 and the Golden Eagles led by double-digit margins the rest of the way. A steal and layup by Jones gave the Golden Eagles a 58-40 lead with three minutes to go and the Golden Eagles went on for the victory.

Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday afternoon with a big road game at Cal Poly Pomona.
