Golden Eagles Win A First-Place Showdown With Wildcats

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team came up big in a California Collegiate Athletic Association first-place showdown with No. 10 Chico State on Thursday.

The Golden Eagles had six players score in double figures and knocked off the Wildcats, 86-80, in a high-paced game in University Gym. Cal State LA (13-3, 8-2 CCAA) knocked Chico State (12-7, 7-3 CCAA) out of first place and maintained its position atop the conference with Cal State Dominguez Hills.

A'Jahni Levias led the Golden Eagles with 14 points and four rebounds, while Eche Okeke had a 12-point, 10-rebound double-double. Corey Cofield also had a superb game with 12 points and eight rebounds.

Evan Oliver led four Chico State players in double figures with 21 points, while Joshua Hamilton had 18 points, seven rebounds and six assists.

Shane Bell had a strong game for the Golden Eagles with 11 points and seven rebounds, while Jaden Lazo also had 11 points in 17 productive minutes. Kris Krause also hit double figures with 10 points and a pair of rebounds.

Cal State LA shot 44.8 percent for the game (30-of-67) and was 11-of-29 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 15-of-26 from the free-throw line. Chico State shot 41.3 percent (26-of-63) and was 8-of-22 from 3-point range. The Wildcats were 20-of-26 from the free-throw line.

Cal State LA did an admirable job on the boards and out-rebounded Chico State, 43-40, and committed 17 turnovers to 16 for the Wildcats.

The Golden Eagles displayed their outstanding depth and had a 41-23 edge in bench scoring.

Cal State LA took command midway through the first half, taking a 29-19 lead after a 3-pointer by Escobar and leading by as many as 12 points before settling for a 47-42 halftime lead.

The Golden Eagles started the second half well with and baskets by Okeke, Deuce Walker and Bell gave them a 53-42 lead with 17:29 remaining. Chico State pulled to within seven points at 61-54 with 13 minutes remaining, but the Golden Eagles went on an 11-2 run, completed with back-to-back 3-pointers by Levias and Lazo, to take a 72-56 lead with 10 minutes to play.

Cal State LA was able to keep Chico State at arm's length for the rest of the way and never led by less than six points until the final few seconds.

Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a home game against Cal Poly Humboldt.
