LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team got its offense untracked in a big way Friday night in its California Collegiate Athletic Association opener against San Francisco State.
Shelby Melin recorded the first two-goal game of her career and helped the Golden Eagles to a 4-1 win over the Gators Friday night in University Stadium. Cal State LA (4-1-2, 1-0 CCAA) took the lead late in the first half on Melin's first goal and then added three more goals early in the second half. San Francisco State (1-6-1, 0-1 CCAA) got its goal in the 72nd minute on a brilliant strike from distance by Lauren Johnston.
Cal State LA had a 19-6 edge in shots, including a 7-0 advantage in the first half. The Golden Eagles also had an 8-2 edge in corner kicks.
Melin, who has scored three goals in the last two games for the Golden Eagles, opened the scoring in the 42nd minute with a big assists from
Destiny Moedano, who dribbled toward the middle of the field and slid a pass nicely to Melin. Melin took it from there and blasted a left-footed shot from the top of the box into the goal in the 42nd minute.
Cal State LA then scored three times in the first 12 minutes of the second half.
Liliana Gonzalez took a hard shot that San Francisco State goalkeeper Cameryn Nunn barely got her fingertips on before the ball settled inside the far post.
Itzel Carbajal had the assist on the goal, the first in her Cal State LA career. The goal was the second of the sesaon for Gonzalez and the 12th of her Cal State LA career.
Jassmin Ortiz made it 3-0 in the 50th minute when she converted a penalty kick for the first goal of her Cal State LA career. Melin scored her second goal of the game - this one on a right-footed shot - to make it 4-0. Ortiz had a shot blocked, but the ball found Melin, who drilled it into the goal.Â
Taesja Paopao didn't allow a goal in 71 minutes of play before turning things over to
McKenzie Maggiore, who made her Cal State LA debut and made one save over the final 19 minutes.Â
Cal State LA will return to action on Sunday with a home game against Cal State Monterey Bay at 2 p.m.
