LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's soccer team got its California Collegiate Athletic Association schedule off to a strong start with a big home win over San Francisco State.
The Golden Eagles (6-0-1, 1-0 CCAA), ranked No. 6 in the nation, struck for three goals in the opening half and went on to a 5-0 win over the Gators Friday at University Stadium.
Jeppe Paulsen scored a pair of goals early in the first half and
Eduardo Castellanos scored in the 43rd minute to stake the Golden Eagles to their halftime lead.
Second-half goals by
Bryan Ortega and
Aidan Wait secured the win, while
Julian Aadlandsvik made four saves for his fifth shutout of the season. Mario De La Torre made nine saves for the Gators (2-4-1, 0-1 CCAA).
Cal State LA had a 21-10 edge in shots, including a 13-3 advantage in the first half. Cal State LA also had a 12-6 advantage in corner kicks.
Paulsen opened the scoring after getting the ball at the top of the box and firing a shot just under the crossbar in the 12th minute.
Tommaso Belli and
Bryan Ortega earned assists on the goal.
Then, less than two minutes later, Paulsen scored again after taking a pass from
Oscar Warne and shooting again from the top of the box and finding the back of the net just inside the near post. The goals were his first two of the season and pushed his career total to six.
Castellanos then scored his first goal of the season - and third of his career - in the 43rd minute. He was on the receiving end of passes by
Sergio Vega and
Oscar Cardenas right in the middle of the box and he fired it into the goal to make it 3-0.
Ortega notched his team-leading fourth goal of the season in the 58th minute with assists from
Jeppe Paulsen and Warne and Wait completed the scoring in the 70th minute after a nice run around a defender and a blazing shot inside the near post. Wait has now scored goals in three straight games and has 10 in his Cal State LA career.
Paulsen had a match-high six shots, while Ortega had five.
Cal State LA will return to action on Sunday with a home game against Cal State Monterey Bay at 11:30 a.m.
