LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's unbeaten streak to start the 2023 season came to an end Sunday with a surprising home loss to Cal State Monterey Bay.
The Otters scored twice in an eight-minute span late in the first half and made it stand up in an impressive 2-0 California Collegiate Athletic Association victory over the No. 6 Golden Eagles at University Stadium. The Golden Eagles (6-1-1, 1-1 CCAA) had 15 shots and nine corner kicks, but could not get one into the net as they were blanked for the first time in 19 games, a stretch dating back to Sept. 25, 2023.
Cal State Monterey Bay (6-1-2, 2-0-0 CCAA) posted its third straight shutout and completed a sensational Southern California trip with identical 2-0 wins over Cal State Dominguez Hills, the 2022 CCAA regular-season champions and Cal State LA, the 2022 CCAA Tournament champions.
Cal State LA had a couple of golden opportunities early, but a bid by
Oscar Warne hit the post and a chance by
Bryan Ortega just missed wide.
The Golden Eagles also had some solid chances in the second half, including a shot by
Andrew Portis through traffic that was cleared by the Otter defense before it could reach the goal-line. Cal State Monterey Bay goalkeeper Jack Blickenstaff made seven saves in the game, including five in the second half to preserve his team's lead.
Julian Aadlandsvik made five saves in goal for the Golden Eagles.
Each team had 15 shots in the contest, while the Golden Eagles had a 9-5 edge in corner kicks, including 6-2 in the second half when they were trying to rally.
The Otters scored the game's first goal in the 35th minute when Miguel Guerrero set up Julian Lomeli, whose nice pass into the box was one-touched into the goal by Roberto Banegas.
Less than eight minutes later, a shot by Banegas was blocked, but Lomeli was there to fire it in from outside the box to make it 2-0.
Ortega, Warne and Portis had three shots each for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State LA will play its next three games on the road, beginning with a contest at Cal State East Bay next Friday at 4:30 p.m.
