HAYWARD -- Cal State LA's men's soccer made a nice comeback after suffering its first loss of the season last Sunday.
The Golden Eagles scored in the first minute of the game and made it stand up in an important 1-0 victory at Cal State East Bay Friday at Pioneer Stadium. Cal State LA (7-1-1, 2-1 CCAA) did a superb job of controlling the play for much of the match to outlast a talented Cal State East Bay team (6-3-1, 1-2 CCAA) that has turned things around under former Cal State LA assistant coach Michael Haswell.
The lone goal of the game came just 43 seconds in. The Golden Eagles pushed the ball immediately down the field and had tremendous pressure. That led to
Jeppe Paulsen deflecting a pass to the middle of the field to
Tommaso Belli, who rifled a left-footed shot from outside the box brilliantly into the net. It was Belli's first goal of the season and the fourth of his career.
Paulsen picked up his second assist of the season and now has six points for the season, which is tied for second on the team.
Julian Aadlandsvik made six saves for the Golden Eagles and Cal State LA picked up its sixth shutout of the season.
Cal State LA had a 15-11 edge in shots, including a 10-5 edge in the second half. The Golden Eagles also had a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Cal State East Bay goalkeeper Adan Corona made seven saves to keep his team in the contest, including a stop on a penalty kick attempt by Paulsen with about 10 minutes left and a diving stop to prevent a goal by
Geovanni Antuna and another big stop on a strong bid by
Oscar Warne in the final minute.
Paulsen and
Sergio Vega led the Golden Eagles with four shots each, while Belli and Antuna had two each.
Cal State LA will return to action on Sunday with a road game at Cal State San Marcos at 2 p.m.
