CARSON -- Cal State LA's men's soccer team battled to a 1-1 draw Saturday night in a competitive non-conference contest against California Collegiate Athletic Association rival Cal State Dominguez Hills at Dignity Health Sports Park.
The No. 2 Golden Eagles (5-0-1) suffered their first blemish in the 2023 season, but completed their non-conference schedule unbeaten through six contests. Cal State LA conceded just its second goal of the season, on a penalty kick late in the second half.
Cal State LA, which dictated the action for most of the first half, took a 1-0 lead in the 34th minute on a free kick goal by
Aidan Wait, his second goal of the season and ninth of his Cal State LA career. Wait has now scored in two straight games.
Jhoel Sarraude tied it in the 73rd minute for the Toros (3-1-2) with a penalty kick goal, his first of the season.
Cal State Dominguez Hills wound up with a 19-11 advantage in shots, including a 12-3 edge in the second half. The Toros also had a 13-3 advantage in corner kicks, several of which were thwarted by Cal State LA defender
Andrew Portis, who was consistently able to soar above the crowd and head the ball out of danger.
The game, which pitted the 2022 CCAA Tournament champion Golden Eagles against the 2022 CCAA regular-season champion Toros, was a spirited one, with the two teams combining for seven yellow cards, six of them after the first half ended. A total of 26 fouls were called in the game, 15 on the Toros and 11 on the Golden Eagles.
Oscar Warne had three shots for the Golden Eagles, two on goal, while
Carl Solli had two. Martin Velasquez and Sarraude had five each for the Toros.
Julian Aadlandsvik had another strong game in goal for the Golden Eagles. He made five saves and the only goal he allowed was on the penalty kick.
Cal State LA will open conference play on Friday in a home match against San Francisco State beginning at 4:30 p.m.
