Golden Eagles Battle To A 0-0 Draw Against Cougars

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team battled to a 0-0 tie against Azusa Pacific on Saturday night in a game that featured plenty of late-game drama.

The Golden Eagles had a chance to take the lead in the 88th minute only to see a penalty kick from Liliana Gonzalez hit the crossbar and stay out, while Azusa Pacific had a dangerous free kick from Bethany Tee saved beautifully by Taesja Paopao with time running out.

Cal State LA (2-1-2) settled for its second tie against a PacWest contender, while Azusa Pacific (3-2-1) earned its first draw of the season.

The game was well-played and there was plenty of action, just not a lot of quality scoring chances. Azusa Pacific had a 10-6 advantage in shots for the game with an 8-5 edge in the second half. Paopao made six saves for the Golden Eagles, all six in the second half, although Cal State LA's defense did a good job making sure most of those attempts were from a great distance.

Gonzalez had a team-high three shots for the Golden Eagles, while Delia Bocanegra had two shots and Shelby Melin had one.

In addition to the big save at the end of the game from Paopao, the Golden Eagles also got a big save from Skylynn Rodriguez in the opening stages of the second half when she was able to head out a shot by Rilee Bradbury that seemed destined for the net.

Cal State LA will return to action next Saturday in a non-conference game against Cal State Dominguez Hills at 3:30 p.m. at Dignity Health Sports Park.
