No. 21 Golden Eagles Open CCAA Play With A Sweep

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team opened defense of its California Collegiate Athletic Association championship with a sweep Friday night against Chico State.

The Golden Eagles, the defending NCAA West Region and CCAA champions, played at home for the first time this season and put on a good show with a 25-10, 25-20, 25-11 win over the Wildcats in University Gym. Cal State LA (3-6, 1-0 CCAA) had a 39-14 advantage in kills in three sets against Chico State (3-2, 0-1 CCAA).

Cal State LA, ranked No. 21 in the nation in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association poll, took command early and never relinquished its edge. There were only nine ties and four lead chances in the three sets,

All-American Emily Elliott led the way with 14 kills, three aces and six blocks, while 2022 AVCA Freshman of the Iane Henke had eight kills, three aces, two blocks and 13 digs.

Ashley Dittmann also had eight kills for the Golden Eagles, who hit .341 for the match.

Brooklynn Anderson had four kills for the Wildcats.

In addition to the big edge in kills, Cal State LA also had an 11-3 advantage in service aces and a 10-3 edge in blocks. While the Golden Eagles hit .341, they also defended well and held Chico State to a -0.70 hitting percentage with 14 kills and 19 errors.

Haley Roundtree had six kills and a .600 hitting percentage, while Jaden Grova had 20 set assists, two service aces and eight digs.

Cal State LA set the tone early, going on a 6-0 run behind the serving of Elliott to take a 9-3 lead in the opening set. The Golden Eagles then went on a 10-2 surge behind the serving of Dittmann and Jameson Sanders, eventually taking a 19-6 lead after a kill from Elliott. Henke served out the last three points of the set, getting back-to-back blocks from Elliott and a kill from Dittmann to end the frame.

The second set was very competitive and Chico State held an 11-8 advantage after a kill by Zoe DiNardo. Cal State LA, though, scored the next four points on two kills by Elliott and two attack errors to erase the deficit. After Chico State tied it at 12-12, the Golden Eagles got a kill from Henke and an ace from Henke and led the rest of the way. Cal State LA extended its lead to 19-14 after a kill by Roundtree, but Chico State battled back to cut the deficit to 20-18 before a kill by Roundtree and an attack error made it 22-18. The Golden Eagles got to set point after a serving error and won the set after another kill by Elliott.

Cal State LA scored the first four points of the final set, including back-to-back aces from Grova, and never trailed. The Golden Eagles opened up a 12-2 lead on a strong serving run by Matalasi Danielson and, after Chico State got to within 16-11, the Golden Eagles scored the final nine points, the final eight during Henke's serve.

Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday at 2 p.m. in a home match against Stanislaus State.
