No. 21 Golden Eagles Win Tough Battle With Warriors

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team battled through some adversity on Saturday in a tough four-set win over Stanislaus State.

The Golden Eagles took the first two sets, but needed to rally strongly in the fourth frame to avoid a fifth set in a 25-18, 25-21, 18-25, 25-21 California Collegiate Athletic Association win over the Warriors in University Gym. Cal State LA (4-6, 2-0 CCAA) emerges as one of five teams unbeaten after the first weekend of conference play.

The Golden Eagles had a real battle on their hands, though, after taking the first two sets. Stanislaus State (5-5, 0-2 CCAA) took the third set 25-18 and had leads as large as five points in the fourth set before Cal State LA bounced back to close out the match.

Iane Henke had a match-high 18 kills and 15 digs to lead the Golden Eagles, while Emily Elliott had 13 kills and 13 digs and Ashley Dittmann had 13 kills and five digs.

Mariah Iosua had 11 kills, two aces and nine digs for the Warriors.

Haley Roundtree had eight kills and two blocks for the Golden Eagles, while Jaden Grova had 28 set assists and six digs.

Cal State LA had a 58-42 edge in kills and had a .257-.206 advantage in hitting percentage. The Golden Eagles had only three aces and 13 service errors, while the Warriors had seven aces and 12 errors. Stanislaus State had a 7-4 blocking edge.

The Golden Eagles took control in the latter stages of the opening set, scoring five straight points to break a 16-16 tie. A kill by Elliott pushed the lead to 21-16. Stanislaus State got as close as 22-18, but a kill by Dittmann, an ace by Elliott and an attack error ended the set.

Cal State LA took the second set as well. After trailing 12-11, the Golden Eagles got a kill by Dittmann, a ball handling error and kills by Dittmann, Roundtree and Henke to open up a 16-12 lead. Kills by Henke and Elliott pushed the lead to 21-16 and a kill by Dittmann got the Golden Eagles to set point at 24-19. After the Warriors made it 24-21, the Golden Eagles got a kill by Roundtree to go up, 2-0.

The Golden Eagles held a 14-13 lead in the third set, but the Warriors responded with an 8-1 run to take a 21-15 lead and kept on going from there to close out the set on an ace by Iosua.

The Golden Eagles found themselves trailing in the fourth set as well, falling behind by as many as five points and staring at a 20-17 deficit before they caught fire again. A 6-0 run erased the deficit and, after a kill by Dittmann tied it at 20-20, kills by Henke and Dittmann and an attack error gave the Golden Eagles a 23-20 lead.

The Golden Eagles surrendered the next point to make it 23-21, but a kill by Henke and an attack error closed out the match.

Cal State LA will return to action next Friday with a road match at Cal Poly Pomona at 5 p.m.
