LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's soccer team kept its scoreless streak - and its unbeaten start to the 2023 season - in tact with a win Tuesday night against a formidable opponent.
The Golden Eagles, who climbed to No. 2 in the nation earlier in the day in the latest United Soccer Coaches national poll, scored a goal in each half and recorded a 2-0 win over Azusa Pacific at University Stadium. Cal State LA (4-0) beat the Cougars for the second straight season and are now 2-0-1 in the last three meetings since Azusa Pacific beat the Golden Eagles in overtime in the 2018 NCAA playoffs in Azusa.Â
The two teams also met in the 2014 NCAA playoffs with the Golden Eagles earning a 1-0 win on their way to an NCAA West Region championship.
Julian Aadlandsvik, who was named as the California Collegiate Athletic Association Defensive Player of the Week earlier in the day, recorded a season-high six saves for his fourth shutout of the season.
Andrew Portis scored his first goal of the season in the 29th minute to stake the Golden Eagles to a 1-0 lead and
Bryan Ortega got the second goal, his second of the season, with a brilliant run from midfield that culminated in a score.
Cal State LA held a 14-9 advantage in shots, including a 10-2 edge in the opening half. Each team had three corner kicks with the Golden Eagles getting all of theirs in the first half and the Cougars earning all of theirs in the second half.
Aadlandsvik made his lone save of the first half in the 10th minute as the Golden Eagles took a little time to get their bearings against the Cougars (1-2-1). The first big scoring chance of the game came in the 20th minute when
Carson Nguyen hit a shot off the crossbar and
Oliver Diaz had a quick rebound attempt in the box go high and out of play.
The first goal of the game came when Portis headed in a long free kick from
Bryan Ortega for the second goal of his Cal State LA career and first this season. Ortega's assist was his team-leading third of the season.
He then added an insurance goal for the Golden Eagles when he collected a deflected ball and quickly carried it into Azusa Pacific territory on a 2-on-1 break. With the goalie out, he was able to place the ball into the goal from close-range for his second goal of the season and eighth of his Cal State LA career.
He also recorded a multi-point game for the second straight outing.
Azusa Pacific goalkeeper Leo Moreno made two saves, while Gabriel Oropeza, Issaka Salifu and Yansaneh Musa had two shots each.
Diaz and
Sergio Vega had three shots each for the Golden Eagles, while Ortega,
Emil Antonacci and Nguyen had two each.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a home game against Point Loma at 7 p.m.
