LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's baseball team fell behind early and never got things turned around on a dreary Sunday at Reeder Field.
Playing under cloudy skies and intermittent rain, the Golden Eagles fell to Cal State San Marcos, 20-10, in the finale of a four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association series. Cal State LA (8-10, 3-6 CCAA) was seeking a series sweep, but instead Cal State San Marcos (7-12, 1-8 CCAA) collected 22 hits and captured its first conference win of the season.
One bright spot for the Golden Eagles was the play of
Matthew Piotrowski, who had three more hits on Sunday and finished the series 9-for-16 with five runs scored and 12 RBI. He hit three home runs in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader.
Johnny Pacheco hit a home run as part of a 2-for-5 day at the plate and
Ethan Gonzalez and
Kadyn Victorian-Young had two hits each. Gonzalez scored twice and drove in a run and Victorian-Young scored a run and drove in two.
Luke Reece was 3-for-4 with five RBI for Cal State San Marcos, while Sean McGrew and Nico Diaz had four hits each. Ethan Rivera had a pair of hits, including a two-run home run.
Andrew Tovar had a two-run home run for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State LA wound up with 11 hits, but also committed a season-high seven errors in the contest.
Josh Kim allowed only three hits and two runs in six innings for the Cougars to get the win. He carried a shutout into the sixth before a two-out single by Piotrowski was followed by a two-run home run by Tovar.
Zechariah Jarrard got the start for the Golden Eagles and allowed three earned runs over 3 2/3 innings while walking four and striking out two.
Troy Maki retired the only batter he faced in the fourth and
Joel Martinez,
Eric Navarrete, Deandre Carter and
Jacob Rangel finished up.
Cal State LA will return to action next Friday in the opener of a four-game series at Stanislaus State.
