Golden Eagles Wrap Up A Record Conference Sked

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team put the finishing touches on a record-setting California Collegiate Athletic Association season with a hard-fought win over Cal Poly Humboldt Saturday in University Gym.

The Golden Eagles finished the regular season with a new program-record 16 conference wins after a 79-72 victory over the 'Jacks. Cal State LA (19-8, 16-6 CCAA) finished third in the CCAA - which also matches the best conference finish in program history - and will be the No. 3 seed in next week's CCAA Tournament. No. 3 seed Cal State LA will meet No. 6 seed Sonoma State in a rematch of last year's quarterfinal game on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

Cal State LA jumped out to a quick 14-4 lead after a pair of free throws by Hodges, but the 'Jacks rallied to score the final nine points of the period to trail by just one, 14-13, entering the second quarter.

The 'Jacks opened the second quarter with a 3-pointer by Kaz Parks to take their first lead, but Yesenia Smith immediately countered with a 3-pointer to regain the lead. A late 3-pointer by Flennaugh gave the Golden Eagles a 46-38 halftime lead.

The offensive pace slowed down in the third quarter and the Golden Eagles saw a 10-point lead trimmed to four points heading into the fourth.

Cal Poly Humboldt took a 63-60 lead with 8:27 left and a 65-62 advantage with 6:44 to go, but Cal State LA fought back with a game-tying 3-pointer from Raya Smith that sparked a 7-0 run that included a free throw by Flennaugh, a basket by Raya Smith and a 3-pointer by Flennaugh that made it 71-65 with 3:49 to go.
