CARSON -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team was unable to spoil Cal State Dominguez Hills' party, but the Golden Eagles certainly a major scare into the anticipated proceedings.
The Golden Eagles carried a lead into the waning seconds, but the Toros scored the final four points to post a 64-61 victory Saturday in the Torodome and wrap up the California Collegiate Athletic Association regular-season championship. Cal State LA (17-8, 14-6 CCAA) has lost two straight games for the first time since starting the season 2-3 and slipped into a tie with Chico State in the race for third place in the CCAA. Cal State Dominguez Hills (25-1, 19-1 CCAA) completed a regular-season sweep of the Golden Eagles, but Saturday's game was a lot closer than the first meeting in Los Angeles.
Nicole Flennaugh had 15 points to lead the Golden Eagles, while
Yesenia Smith and
Nevaeh Asiasi had 13 points each.
Dawnyel Lair had 16 points and seven rebounds for the Toros, while Asia Jordan had 12 points and seven rebounds.
Jada Johnson just missed a double-double for the Golden Eagles with nine points and nine rebounds, while
Lily Buggs had eight points and six rebounds.
Olivia Hodges had a game-high 11 rebounds to go along with three points.
Cal State LA shot 38.6 percent for the game (22-of-57) and was 5-of-22 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were also just 12-of-18 from the free-throw line. Cal State Dominguez Hills shot just 36.5 percent (23-of-63) and was 3-of-15 from 3-point range. The Toros were 15-of-21 from the free-throw line.
Cal State LA did a much better job on the boards, out-rebounding the Toros, 41-38. Cal State LA committeed 28 turnovers to 20 for the Toros.
The game was close throughout and included 12 ties and nine lead changes. The Golden Eagles opened up a 19-8 lead after an 8-0 run that consisted of a basket by Johnson and back-to-back 3-pointers by Flennaugh with 1:39 to go in the first quarter.
The Golden Eagles allowed the final five points of the period to lead 19-13 after one quarter. They fell behind by three points in the second quarter, 27-24, before seven straight points from
Yesenia Smith, gave them a 31-27 lead and Cal State LA took a 31-29 into halftime.
The Golden Eagles fell behind by as many as seven points late in the third quarter, but a pair of free throws made it 49-44 entering the final period.
A basket by Buggs tied the game at 52-52 and a layup by Hodges gave the Golden Eagles a 54-52 lead with 6:23 to go. A basket by Johnson gave the Golden Eagles a 60-58 lead with 2:21 to go and Asiasi hit a free throw to break a 60-60 tie with 59 seconds left.
The Golden Eagles then got a steal, but missed a layup and a 3-pointer and the Toros took the lead 62-61 with 23 seconds remaining. The Golden Eagles had a good look at a reverse layup that missed and, after two free throws by the Toros accounted for the three-point margin, a last-second 3-pointer was off the mark and Cal State Dominguez Hills held on.
Cal State LA will return to action on Thursday with the first of two home games to conclude the regular season. The Golden Eagles will face Sonoma State on Thursday in a battle between two of the six teams who have qualified for the CCAA Tournament.
