LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team picked up another big California Collegiate Athletic Association victory on Saturday and the Golden Eagles now find themselves right in the mix for a spot in the CCAA Tournament.
The Golden Eagles completed a regular-season sweep of Chico State with an 87-80 win in University Gym. Cal State LA (11-13, 8-10 CCAA) opened up a seven-point lead at halftime and never relinquished it against the Wildcats (10-13, 8-10 CCAA). The Golden Eagles and Wildcats are locked in a four-way tie with San Francisco State and Cal Poly Pomona for fifth place, just one game behind fourth-place Sonoma State. The top six teams will qualify for the CCAA Tournament.
Shane Bell and
Dominic Escobar shared high-point honors with 18 to lead five Golden Eagles in double figures. Bell had 18 points, six rebounds and six assists, while Escobar had 18 points, two assists and one steal.
Joshua Hamilton had 22 points, six rebounds and eight assists to lead Chico State. Jojo Murphy had 15.
Payton Moore had 15 points off the bench in a strong performance for the Golden Eagles, while
Alexander Sokol had 13 points and eight rebounds. Sokol hit a pair of 3-pointers to give him 77 on the season, which ties the program single-season record.
Jared Pearre also had an excellent game with 11 points and nine rebounds.
Cal State LA shot 47.5 percent for the game (13-of-30) and once again excelled in the second half, hitting 51.6 percent (16-of-31). The Golden Eagles were also an efficent 8-of-14 from 3-point range, including 5-of-6 in the first half. The Golden Eagles were also 21-of-34 from the free-throw line. Chico State shot 40.3 percent (31-of-77) and was just 6-of-31 from 3-point range. The Wildcats were 12-of-17 from the free-throw line.
Cal State LA came out ready to play and opened up a quick 11-2 lead and never wavered. After trailing 2-0, the Golden Eagles got a pair of free throws from Bell, a 3-pointer from Sokol, a layup from
Jaden Lazo and a pair of baskets by Pearre to fuel an 11-0 run.
A jumper by Moore gave the Golden Eagles their first double-digit lead at 17-7 and a 3-pointer by Escobar gave the Golden Eagles their biggest lead at 22-8. The Wildcats were able to get the deficit down to three points, but baskets by Bell and Escobar gave the Golden Eagles a 40-33 lead.
Chico State pulled to within two points early in the second half, but Escobar scored five straight points with a 3-pointer and a layup and Pearre scored to boost the lead back to nine points at 49-40. After Cal State LA took an 11-point lead, Chico State made several strong runs, but the Golden Eagles answered each time. Chico State pulled to within six points with 4:33 left, but Lazo hit a big 3-pointer and Bell scored on a layup to give the Golden Eagles a 79-68 lead and they led comfortably the rest of the way.
Cal State LA will return to action on Thursday with a road game at Cal State East Bay.
