Golden Eagles Drop Conference Contest To Toros

CARSON -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team got off to a sensational start Saturday in its return to California Collegiate Athletic Association action, but the Golden Eagles were unable to turn that into a win.

The Golden Eagles jumped out to a quick 13-2 lead, but Cal State Dominguez Hills turned the tables and went on to an 81-60 victory in the Torodome. Cal State LA (5-5, 2-3 CCAA) dropped its second straight conference decision, while the Toros (5-6, 2-3 CCAA) pulled into a tie with the Golden Eagles in the conference standings.

The Golden Eagles were done in by a season-high 27 turnovers and were out-rebounded by a hefty 55-39 margin. The Golden Eagles held a 19-18 lead after one quarter and were down by a narrow 33-31 margin at halftime. The Toros, though, had a 31-17 advantage in the third quarter to take control and then limited the Golden Eagles to only three fourth-quarter baskets to thwart any hopes of a comeback.

After going 8-of-14 from the floor in the first quarter, the Golden Eagles were just 14-of-43 over the final three periods.

Alicia Jones had 13 points and five assists for the Golden Eagles, while Gabriella Rones and Amaya Fuentes had nine points each.

Nala Williams had a game-high 27 points for the Toros and also had 11 rebounds and eight steals. Asia Jordan had 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Lily Buggs had a team-high 11 rebounds to go along with five points for the Golden Eagles, while Donja Payne had eight points and five rebounds. Ronyae Jackson had seven points and four rebounds and Nicole Flennaugh had five points, four rebounds and two assists. 

Cal State LA shot 38.6 percent for the game (22-of-57) and was just 5-of-21 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 11-of-18 from the free-throw line. Cal State Dominguez Hills, meanwhile, shot 39.5 percent (32-of-81) and was 6-of-20 from 3-point range. The Toros got 24 more shots than the Golden Eagles due to their edge in rebounding and turnovers. Cal State Dominguez Hills had a 55-39 rebounding edge, including a 24-8 edge in offensive rebounds. The Golden Eagles committed 27 turnovers to 17 for the Toros.

Layups by Fuentes and Jones and a 3-pointer by Buggs lifted the Golden Eagles to a 7-0 lead and Cal State LA took leads of 13-2 and 15-4 after layups by Fuentes. The Golden Eagles still had a 19-10 lead after a basket by Jones, but the Toros scored the final eight points of the quarter to make it 19-18. Payne opened the second quarter with a basket to make it 21-18, but theToros scored the next six points and never trailed again. A layup by Rones tied it at 28-28, but the Toros scored the next five points. A 3-pointer by Jackson cut the margin to 33-31 at halftime.

A 3-pointer by Flennaugh brought the Golden Eagles to within 36-34 early in the third quarter and a layup by Flennaugh kept it at 38-36, but the Toros went on a 9-0 run to open up a double-digit lead and pulled away for a 64-48 lead after three quarters.

Cal State LA will return to action with a home game against Cal Poly Pomona on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. in University Gym.
