ROHNERT PARK -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team fought back from a 16-point halftime deficit, but came up short Saturday in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game at Sonoma State.
The Golden Eagles trailed by as many as 19 points and got as close as three points before Sonoma State pulled away down the stretch for a 78-68 victory in The Wolves Den. Cal State LA (5-2, 1-1 CCAA) had a three-game winning streak snapped and settled for a hard-fought split in its first CCAA road trip of the season. Sonoma State (4-3, 1-1 CCAA) also split its first two conference games.
Kris Krause had a career-high 17 points for the Golden Eagles, while
Isaiah Fields had a season-high 14 points.Â
Andrew Henderson had a game-high 21 points and 14 rebounds for Sonoma State, while Cameron Barry had 19.
Corey Cofield added 12 points and eight rebounds for the Golden Eagles, while
Dominic Escobar had 11 points and five steals.
Cal State LA shot just 35 percent for the game (24-of-68) and was 11-of-32 from 3-point range. Sonoma State shot 51.9 percent for the game (27-of-52) and was 6-of-17 from 3-point range. The Seawolves shot 68 percent in the first half while jumping out to a 47-31 halftime lead.
The Golden Eagles were out-rebounded, 48-28, and committed 15 turnovers while forcing 24 from the Seawolves.
Cal State LA took an early 7-2 lead after a basket by Escobar, a layup by
Corey Cofield after a steal by
Jaden Lazo and a 3-pointer by Escobar, but the Golden Eagles had trouble containing the Seawolves in the opening half. Another layup by Cofield gave the Golden Eagles a 9-6 lead, but Sonoma State went on a 10-0 run and led the rest of the way. Cal State LA trailed by just two points at 31-29, but the Seawolves closed the half on a 16-2 run to take the 16-point halftime lead.
Cal State LA fell behind by 19 points, 56-37, with just under 17 minutes remaining, before storming back into the contest. Fields scored five straight points to get the Golden Eagles to within 63-60 with nine minutes remaining and a 3-pointer by Krause made it 69-66 with 4:40 to go, butthe Golden Eagles were unable to get any closer.
Cal State LA will return to action next Thursday with its first home game of the season against Cal State Monterey Bay.
