LOS ANGLES -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team picked up a crucial victory Saturday night in an exciting four-set California Collegiate Athletic Association win over Cal Poly Pomona.
The Golden Eagles showed tremendous fortitude in subduing the Broncos, 27-25, 23-25, 25-21, 27-25 in University Gym. Cal State LA (15-9, 13-3 CCAA) remains one game back of Cal State San Bernardino in the conference race with two matches remaining and pulled two games ahead of the Broncos, San Francisco State and Sonoma State, who are all tied for third. Cal State LA can clinch a first-round bye in the CCAA Tournament, which the Golden Eagles are hosting on Nov. 16-18.
The two participants in Saturday's outstanding battle will be in the tournament field in two weeks. Cal State LA was able to earn a regular-season split with Cal Poly Pomona (18-6, 11-5 CCAA). The Broncos took the opening match in Pomona in September in three sets.
Emily Elliott had another sensational match for the Golden Eagles with 25 kills, two aces and six blocks.
Iane Henke had 15 kills, eight digs and a huge ace late in the fourth set.
Daisy Duke had 15 kills to lead the Broncos, while Kaitlan Tucker and Samantha Champion had 10 kills each and Caitie Mueller had 39 set assists and eight digs.
Ashley Dittmann had eight kills and nine digs, while
Eliza Cannon had 32 set assists and nine digs.
Cal Poly Pomona had a 57-56 edge in kills, while the Golden Eagles narrowly outhit the Broncos, .223-.211. Cal State LA had a 16-10 advantage in blocks and had five aces with 11 service errors to four aces and 12 errors for the Broncos.
The Golden Eagles started slowly, but fought their way back from an 18-11 deficit in the opening set. They still trailed 23-21 before a service error, a kill by Elliott and a block by Elliott gave them a set point at 24-23. They had another set point at 25-24 before a kill by Campion and then put the set away after back-to-back kills from Elliott.
After the Broncos survived a late push by the Golden Eagles in the second set to even the match, the Golden Eagles regained their momentum in the third set. Cal State LA opened up a 19-14 lead after a kill by Elliott and took a 21-15 edge after a kill by Dittmann and a block from
Haley Roundtree and Cannon. Cal Poly Pomona fought back to within 23-21, but a service error and a block by Henke and
Rachel Lowe ended the set.
Cal State LA had a 22-20 lead in the fourth set before kills by Duke, Tucker, an ace by Duke and a kill by Tucker gave the Broncos a 24-22 lead. Cal State LA got a kill from Henke, a big ace from Henke and a block from Lowe and Elliott to get to match point at 25-24. A block by Tucker evened the match at 25-25, but a service error and a kill by Elliott ended the contest.
Cal State LA will return to action on Friday with a match at Stanislaus State.
