Golden Eagles Prevail In Tight Battle With Cougars

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball prevailed in a tough four-set battle with Cal State San Marcos Friday night in University Gym.

The Golden Eagles snapped a two-match losing streak with a hard-fought 26-24, 24-26, 28-26, 25-19 victory over the Cougars in a big California Collegiate Athletic Association match. Cal State LA (14-9, 12-3 CCAA) maintained its hold on second place, one game back of first-place Cal State San Bernardino while snapping Cal State San Marcos' five-match winning streak.

There were a total of 30 tie scores and 11 lead changes in the match, which was close to the end. Every time Cal State LA would look to pull ahead, the Cougars (11-12, 9-6 CCAA) would claw their way back into the contest.

Emily Elliott had a season-high 27 kills to lead the Golden Eagles, while Iane Henke had 16 kills and 18 digs. Ashley Dittmann had 12 kills and 12 digs.

Trinity Barr had 15 kills to lead the Cougars, while Sofia Hedqvist had 11 kills.

Haley Roundtree had eight kills and four blocks for the Golden Eagles, while Zuhal Cetin had five service aces and eight digs.

Cal State LA had a 64-49 edge in kills in the four sets and hit at a .281 clip to .235 for the Cougars. Cal State San Marcos had a narrow 9-7 advantage in blocks, while Cal State LA had 12 service aces and 16 errors, while Cal State San Marcos had eight aces and seven errors.

Cal State LA erased a 12-7 deficit in the opening set with a 7-0 run sparked by kills from Matalasi Danielson and Dittman and an ace by Henke and eventually opened up an 18-14 lead after an ace by Jameson Sanders and kills by Dittmann and Roundtree. An ace by Elliott gave the Golden Eagles a 20-17 lead and kills by Henke and Elliott got the Golden Eagles to set point at 24-23. After a service error, a kill by Elliott and an ace by Henke closed out the set.

Cal State LA looked poised to take a 2-0 lead after taking a 24-22 lead in the second set, but the Cougars s stunned the Golden Eagles by scoring the final four points, including back-to-back aces from Jackie Phillips to end the set.

Cal State LA saw a 13-7 lead nearly evaporate after a 5-0 run and the Golden Eagles saw a 22-18 lead wiped out by a 4-0 Cal State San Marcos run. A kill by Elliott got the Golden Eagles to set point at 24-23 and a service error gave the Golden Eagles another set point at 25-24. A kill by Dittmann gave the Golden Eagles their third set point at 26-25 and, after a kill by Hedqvist tied it at 26-26, the Golden Eagles got to another set point at 27-26 and took the set on an attack error.

The Golden Eagles had their hands full in the fourth set as well before extending a narrow 20-18 lead to 23-18 after a kill by Henke and two straight kills by Elliott. Another kill by Elliott got the Golden Eagles to match point at 24-19 and Elliott got another kill to end the match.

Cal State LA honored six seniors in pregame ceremonies -- Kaili Vandenberg, Eliza Cannon, Beatriz Jimenez, Ashley Dittmann, Jaden Grova and Shelby Grubbs.

The Golden Eagles will return to action on Saturday with a match against Cal Poly Pomona at 5 p.m.
