Golden Eagles Fall Just Short In Tournament Final

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team gave an electric University Gym crowd plenty to cheer about on Saturday in the California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament championship, but the visiting Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes were the ones celebrating at the end of a highly entertaining four-set match.

The No. 2 seed Golden Eagles, after splitting the first two sets, had leads in each of the final two frames, but the No. 1 seed Coyotes prevailed, 25-19, 18-25, 25-22, 26-24, in a fitting battle between the CCAA regular-season co-champions for the tournament title.

Cal State San Bernardino captured its sixth tournament title in the eight years of the tourney. Cal State LA was making its second-ever appearance in the title game and is still seeking its first title.

Emily Elliott, the conference's Player of the Year, had 29 kills, just one off her career high, in 80 attempts, which is the most for a Cal State LA player since Karla Santos in 2017. Iane Henke had 10 kills and a team-high 21 digs, while Ashley Dittmann had eight kills and 19 digs.

Jenna Patton had 10 kills and five blocks for the Coyotes (24-4), while tournament Most Valuable Player Marlee Nunley had 29 set assists, three kills and three blocks.

Eliza Cannon had 46 set assists for the Golden Eagles, while Haley Roundtree had seven kills and six blocks.

Cal State LA (18-10) had a 58-39 edge in kills, but defense was the name of the game as both teams had trouble putting points away. The Golden Eagles hit .135 for the match, while the Coyotes hit .121. Cal State San Bernardino had a 13-9 edge in blocks and Cal State LA made 14 service aces and just four aces, while the Coyotes had five aces and three errors.

The Golden Eagles had 34 attack errors and 14 service errors in the match compared to 21 attack errors and three service errors by the Coyotes.

After dropping the first set, the Golden Eagles rallied impressively in the second frame, jumping out to a 14-6 lead and never looking back. Cal State LA held leads of at least four points the rest of the way and took the set after back-to-back kills by Elliott.

Cal State LA then looked poised to take the lead after jumping out to a 15-10 advantage in the third set on a kill by Elliott, a block by Dittmann and Roundtree and a kill by Roundtree. Cal State LA still held an 18-15 edge before the Coyotes scored three straight points to tie it. An ace by Henke gave the Golden Eagles a 22-21 lead, but the Coyotes scored the final four points to take the set after back-to-back blocks by Taryn King and Ashley Robinson.

Cal State LA had its chances in the final set as well, taking a 21-19 lead, a 22-21 lead after a kill by Henke and a 24-22 advantage before the Coyotes rattled off the final four points to take the match.

Both teams will tune in to the NCAA Selection Show on Monday at 4:30 p.m. on ncaa.com to learn the tournament field. Cal State San Bernardino, which locked up the CCAA's automatic bid with the win on Saturday, was ranked No. 2 in the region and Cal State LA was No. 5 in the latest regional ranking.
