Golden Eagles Advance After Four-Set Win Victory

SAN BERNARDINO -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team advanced in the NCAA Tournament after a tough four-set win over Seattle Pacific.

The Golden Eagles, the defending NCAA West Region champions, brilliantly overcame some adversity before putting the finishing touches on a 25-13, 21-25, 25-21, 25-20 win over the Falcons in Coussoulis Arena. No. 4 seed Cal State LA (19-10) advances to the regional semi-finals for a third straight year and will face No. 1 seed Chaminade (30-3) on Friday in a rematch of last year's West Region championship match won by the Golden Eagles in Washington.

West Region Player of the Year Emily Elliott had 18 kills, 13 digs and two aces to lead three Golden Eagles in double figures. Iane Henke had 14 kills and a team-high 16 digs and Ashley Dittmann had 11 kills and eight digs.

Hannah Hair and Sarah Brachvogel had eight kills each for Seattle Pacific (22-5), the champions of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.

The Golden Eagles also got some nice production from middle blockers Haley Roundtree and Shelby Grubbs, who combined for 13 kills and nine blocks. Eliza Cannon had 30 set assists, five blocks and three kills.

Cal State LA had a 59-36 advantage in kills in the four sets and a 9-8 edge in blocks. Cal State LA outhit Seattle Pacific, .250-..092. The Golden Eagles had five aces and seven errors, while Seattle Pacific had six aces and six errors. Jameson Sanders had a team-high three aces for the Golden Eagles.

After a dominating performance in the first set that ran the Golden Eagles' consecutive regional sets streak to nine, Cal State LA ran into some headwinds from Seattle Pacific. The Falcons regrouped to win the second set to even the match and jumped out to an 8-2 lead in the third set. The Golden Eagles still trailed, 10-4, before back-to-back aces from Sanders brought them back to 10-8. Kills by Roundtree and Elliott and back-to-back kills from Henke pushed the Golden Eagles ahead at 12-11, and a 5-0 run that erased a 15-14 deficit put them ahead for good. Kills by Henke and Roundtree, two straight kills by Elliott and a block by Grubbs and Cannon made it 19-15. A kill by Cannon got the Golden Eagles to set point and a kill by Roundtree gave the Golden Eagles a 2-1 lead.

Cal State LA jumped out to leads of 5-1, 7-3 and 9-4 in the fourth set, but the Falcons surged to tie it at 9-9 and eventually took a 14-11 lead. Once again, though, the Golden Eagles dug deep and scored seven of the next eight points to take an 18-15 lead after two kills by Elliott and one by Dittmann. Next, it was Seattle Pacific's turn to dig deep and the Falcons tied it at 19-19 before kills by Elliott and Henke gave the Golden Eagles the lead for good. After Seattle Pacific closed to within 21-20, the Golden Eagles got a kill from Cannon, an attack error and kills by Elliott and Roundtree to end the match.

Cal State LA's match on Friday against Chaminade is set to begin at 5 p.m.
