ELLENSBERG, WASH. -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team picked up a big win on Saturday to conclude play in the CWU Tournament hosted by Central Washington.
The Golden Eagles came up big when it mattered most and earned an impressive 77-73 win over the Nighthawks in Nicholson Pavilion. Cal State LA (3-1) outscored the Nighthawks, 40-32, in the second half to pick up the win.
Shane Bell had another outstanding game for the Golden Eagles and led all scorers with 20 points. He also had three rebounds and three assists one day after scoring 28 points in a loss to Central Washington. He led four Golden Eagles in double figures.
Dominic Escobar had 15 points and six rebounds,
Corey Cofield had 15 points and five rebounds and
Eche Okeke had 11 points and five rebounds.
Northwest Nazarene (1-2), which is picked to finish second in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, was led by Ryzin Bergersen, who had 20 points and Gabriel Murphy, who had 18 points and 17 rebounds.
Deuce Walker had had six points for the Golden Eagles, while
Isaiah Fields and
A'Jahni Levias had four points each.
Cal State LAÂ was efficient on offense once again and shot 50 percent for the game (27-of-54), including 54 percent (15-of-27) in the second half. The Golden Eagles were 5-of-17 from 3-point range and 18-of-22 from the free-throw line. Northwest Nazarene shot 37.7 percent (23-of-61) and was 7-of-22 from 3-point range. The Nighthawks were 20-of-29 from the free-throw line.
Northwest Nazarene had a 48-25 rebounding edge, while Cal State LA committed only nine turnovers to 18 for the Nighthawks. Okeke had four steals for the Golden Eagles.
The Golden Eagles trailed as many as nine points in the first half, but were able to cut the deficit to 41-37 by halftime.
Cal State LA then found itself trailing by 12 points, 55-43, with 15 minutes to go before going on a 10-0 run to get right back in the game. A dunk by Cofield started the run and jumpers by Walker and Cofield followed by back-to-back baskets by Bell cut the margin to 55-53 with 12 minutes to go.
An offensive rebound basket by Cofield gave the Golden Eagles their first lead of the second half at 59-58 and, after the Nighthawks took a 63-59 lead, the Golden Eagles responded with another 10-0 run to take the lead for good. Three-pointers by Bell and Escobar gave the Golden Eagles the lead, 65-63, and a pair of free throws by Escobar and a dunk by Okeke made it 69-63.
A dunk by Cofield kept the lead at six, 73-69, and the Golden Eagles got a pair of free throws by Escobar to put the game away.
Cal State LA will return to action on Tuesday with a game at Azusa Pacific.
