ARCATA -- Cal State LA's men's soccer team made it three in a row with a dramatic ending to another California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament battle with Cal Poly Pomona.
The No. 1 seed Golden Eagles won their third straight tournament championship and fifth in six years by prevailing in penalty kicks, 4-3, after battling to a 0-0 draw with No. 2 seed Cal Poly Pomona. Cal State LA (16-1-2) extended its unbeaten streak to 11 games and claimed the CCAA's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Cal State LA became the first team to win three CCAA Tournament titles in a row since Cal State Dominguez Hills won four in a row in 1999-2002. The Golden Eagles won their seventh conference tournament title overall, tying the Toros for the most in tournament history.
The game was a slugfest between two of the top teams in the nation. Cal State LA entered the week ranked No. 4 in the country, while Cal Poly Pomona (13-1-5) was ranked No. 6. After nothing was decided in regulation plus two overtime periods, the game moved to penalty kicks. The Golden Eagles took command early thanks to a successful attempt by
Bryan Ortega on their first try and a huge save by
Julian Aadlandsvik on Cal Poly Pomona's first attempt.
Carl Solli,
Oliver Diaz and
Tommaso Belli all converted their tries and, after a miss on the fifth attempt, Aadlandsvik made another diving stop to give the Golden Eagles the championship.
It was Cal State LA's first shootout since the memorable one in the 2021 NCAA semifinals against Nova Southeastern when
Alvaro Unanua made three unbelievable saves to allow the Golden Eagles to recover from missing their first two attempts and advance to the national title game, where they beat Charleston, 1-0, to win the program's first-ever national title.
It was also the first shootout in the CCAA Tournament since Cal Poly Pomona denied the Golden Eagles a third straight tourney title in 2019 on penalty kicks after a 1-1 draw.
Aadlandsvik was brilliant on Sunday and made 10 saves altogether, eight of them during regulation and the two overtimes and two in the penalty kick shootout.
Cal Poly Pomona had a 23-12 advantage in shots, but Cal State LA was outstanding defending all day and made sure most of the shots were from distance or well off target. Diaz had three shots for the Golden Eagles, while Ortega had a couple of near misses on high-quality shots.
Aadlandvik was named the tournament's Most Valuable Defensive Player, while Ortega was named the Most Valuable Offensive Player. They were joined on the All-Tournament team by Diaz, Solli and
Andrew Portis. Solli made the third CCAA All-Tournament Team of his championship career.
Cal State LA will now await the announcement of the 2023 NCAA Tournament field on Monday at 4 p.m. on ncaa.com.
