SAN BERNARDINO -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team started well, but Cal State San Bernardino roared back to capture a first-place showdown between nationally-ranked teams Saturday night.
The Golden Eagles took the opening set, but, for the second straight match, dropped the final three as the Yotes posted a 21-25, 25-19, 25-13, 25-19 victory in Coussoulis Arena and took over sole possession off first place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. No. 23 Cal State LA (13-9, 11-3 CCAA), dropped its second four-set match this week and fell one game back of No. 8 Cal State San Bernardino (19-3, 12-2 CCAA) with four conference matches remaining.
Despite the loss, the Golden Eagles clinched a spot in the CCAA Tournament, which they will host on Nov. 16-18 in University Gym. Cal State LA will be making its eighth straight appearance in the conference tournament and seeking its first title.
Emily Elliott had 17 kills for the Golden Eagles, while
Iane Henke had nine kills and
Ashley Dittmann had eight kills.
Trinity Sheridan had a match-high 20 kills for the Yotes, while Jenna Patton and Ashley Richardson had 11 each.
Jaden Grova had 27 set assists for the Golden Eagles, while
Jameson Sanders had eight digs.
Cal State LA hit at a .227 clip, but was unable to slow down the Yotes, who hit .348 and had a 52-39 advantage in kills. Cal State LA had a 5-4 edge in blocks.
The Golden Eagles struggled with their serves, recording only three aces with 16 serving errors. Cal State San Bernardino had 10 aces and 14 errors.
Cal State LA started well and took the opening set. leading from start to finish. The Golden Eagles opened up a 15-11 edge after a kill by
Haley Roundtree and a block by Roundtree and Grova and, after the Yotes closed to within 19-18, took advantage of two errors to take a 21-18 lead. A kill by Elliott got the Golden Eagles to set point at 24-20 and, one point later, a kill by Elliott ended the set.
The Golden Eagles fell behind in the second set, 8-3 and 14-7 and never recovered. In the third set, the Yotes raced to an 11-1 lead and took a 2-1 lead.
Cal State LA threatened in the fourth set and held a 10-7 lead before the Yotes scored six straight points to take the lead for good. Cal State LA got to within 20-17 after a block by
Rachel Lowe and Dittmann, but the Yotes held a steady and closed out the match.
Cal State LA will return to action with a home match on Friday against Cal State San Marcos at 5 p.m.
