SAN FRANCISCO -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team saw its lengthy nine-game California Collegiate Athletic Association winning streak come to an end Thursday night at San Francisco State.
The No. 23 Golden Eagles won the first set, but the Gators regrouped and went on to a 20-25, 25-18, 25-15, 25-21 win in San Francisco State's Main Gym. Cal State LA (13-8, 11-2 CCAA) hadn't lost a match since falling at Cal Poly Pomona on Sept. 22.
San Francisco State (13-8, 9-4 CCAA) avenged an early-season three-set loss to the Golden Eagles in Los Angeles and improved to 5-1 at home.
Emily Elliott had 18 kills to lead the Golden Eagles and also had one of the best serving performances in program history. She had eight aces, which is tied with Kristy Sain for third all-time in a single match, just one shy of the program record of nine held by Mary Laupepa in 2009 and Lizelle Jackson in 2002. Sain had eight aces in a match in 2001. The eight aces are also tied for the conference best in a match this season.
Haley Roundtree had seven kills and three blocks and
Iane Henke had seven kills, four aces and 12 digs.Â
Trinity Yates had 18 kills and hit at a .593 clip for the Gators, while Tamiya Wilson had 11 kills and Rebecca Rendalh had 10 kills.
Jaden Grova had 27 set assists and three aces,
Ashley Dittmann had five kills, four blocks and 11 digs and
Jameson Sanders had 10 digs and two aces.
The Golden Eagles roared back from a 14-11 deficit to win the opening set. The Golden Eagles used a 4-0 run to take an 18-15 lead after a service error, a kill by Elliott, an ace by Sanders and a kill by Roundtree and got a 5-0 run to take command at 23-17. Elliott had four straight aces to power the Golden Eagles to the lead. Kills by Roundtree accounted for the final two points.
San Francisco State, though, opened the second set with a 6-1 run and never trailed and then overcame a 9-8 deficit in the third set with a 10-2 run to take control.
Cal State LA erased a 17-13 deficit in the fourth set with a kill by Roundtree, an ace by Elliott, a kill by Roundtree, another ace by Elliott, a kill from Roundtree and another ace by Elliott to take a 19-17 lead. The Gators, though, scored the next six points to take a 23-19 lead and ultimately closed out the match.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with first place in the CCAA on the line at Cal State San Bernardino.
