LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team overcame another tough battle on Saturday and stretched its current winning streak to nine.
The Golden Eagles dropped the first set for a second straight night and roared back to post a 21-25, 25-21, 25-14, 25-19 victory over Cal State East Bay in a California Collegiate Athletic Association contest in University Gym. Cal State LA (13-7, 11-1 CCAA) maintained its hold on first place in the conference, while Cal State East Bay (10-9, 6-6 CCAA), which entered the weekend riding a six-game winning streak, dropped its second straight contest.
Iane Henke had 18 kills, 13 digs and three aces to lead the Golden Eagles. She hit at a .378 percentage.
Emily Elliott had 16 kills and seven digs and
Ashley Dittmann recorded her second straight double-double with 12 kills and 12 digs.
Mia Jordan had 10 kills and two blocks for the Pioneers. Kara Green had eight kills and 14 digs.
Eliza Cannon had six kills, 26 set assists, seven digs and four blocks.
Haley Roundtree had four kills and three blocks.
Cal State LA had a 58-39 advantage in kills and hit at a .269 percentage to .171 for the Pioneers. The Golden Eagles had an 8-7 advantage in blocks and had nine service aces compared to 13 errors. Cal State East Bay had three aces and five errors.
After dropping the first set, the Golden Eagles jumped out to early leads of 9-2 and 11-3 in the second set and held off the Pioneers to even the match. Cal State LA held a 16-5 lead after three kills by Henke and one by Cannon fueled a 4-0 run, but the Pioneers responded with a 6-0 run to pull to within 16-11.
Cal State East Bay got as close as 18-14 before a service error and a kill by Elliott made it 20-14. The Pioneers got back to within 23-19, but a block by Cannon and Henke got the Golden Eagles to set point and a kill by Cannon ended the set.
Cal State LA scored the first five points of the third set, including a pair of aces from
Jameson Sanders and led from start to finish. A block by Dittmann and Roundtree opened up an 11-2 lead and Cal State LA had a 20-11 lead after an ace by
Brooke Paige. Cal State East Bay scored three straight points to make it 20-14, but the Golden Eagles scored five straight points to end the set. Kills by Elliott and Dittmann, an ace by Chandler, a block by Lowe and Cannon and a kill by Dittmann accounted for those points.
The fourth set featured eight ties and four lead changes. After a kill by Elliott gave the Golden Eagles an 18-14 lead, the Pioneers scored three straight points to pull to within 18-17. Kills by Elliott and Dittmann boosted the lead back to 20-17 and, after the Pioneers got to within 20-19, the Golden Eagles scored the final five points to end it. Kills by Elliott and Henke, a ball-handling error, a block by Dittmann and
Rachel Lowe and a kill by Dittmann ended it.
Cal State LA returns to action on Thursday with a road game at San Francisco State.Â
