LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team kept its winning streak alive, but not before a major test from an upset-minded Cal State Monterey Bay team.
The Golden Eagles dropped the first set, but fought back to earn a 22-25, 25-13, 25-21, 25-22 victory over the Otters Friday night in University Gym. Cal State LA (12-7, 10-1 CCAA) won its eighth straight match to maintain its spot atop the California Collegiate Athletic Association standings.
The Golden Eagles had won 17 straight sets before dropping the opening set on Friday.
Emily Elliott had another outstanding match for the Golden Eagles, recording 23 kills and five blocks and hitting at a .309 percentage.
Ashley Dittmann added 12 kills, 12 digs and two aces in a strong all-around match.
Jackie Wahl had 15 kills, three aces and eight digs to lead Cal State Monterey Bay (7-11, 4-7 CCAA). Kaylie Honberger had nine kills and eight digs.
Iane Henke had seven kills, three aces and 20 digs,
Jaden Grova had 28 set assists and eight digs and
Jameson Sanders had 14 digs and three aces.
Cal State LA had a 51-40 advantage in kills and outhit the Otters, .227-.110. The Golden Eagles also had a 10-6 blocking edge and had 11 service aces to six for the Otters.
After dropping the first set, the Golden Eagles roared back in the second, scoring the first six points behind the serving of Henke and never looking back. Kills by Dittmann and Elliott, an ace by Sanders, a block by Elliott and a kill by Elliott gave the Golden Eagles a 19-9 advantage and the Golden Eagles eventually closed out the set with kills by Henke and Elliott and an attack error.
Cal State LA scored the first eight points of the third set with a stretch highlighted by kills from Elliott, Dittmann, Henke,
Matalasi Danielson and an ace by Henke and built up a 10-2 lead. Cal State Monterey Bay, though, responded with an 8-0 run to level the set at 12-12 and eventually took leads of 19-18 and 20-19. Cal State LA, though, scored five straight points to get to set point and ultimately ended the frame on a kill by
Eliza Cannon.
The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the fourth set, but again Cal State Monterey Bay responded and took a 10-9 lead. The set was tied at 15-15 before a pair of attack errors gave the Golden Eagles the lead for good. A kill by Cannon and a block by Elliott and Danielson gave the Golden Eagles a 20-17 lead and a kill by Elliott and a block by Elliott and Danielson boosted the lead to 22-18. Cal State Monterey Bay fought back to make it 23-22, but a kill by Elliott and a block by
Haley Roundtree and Cannon ended the match.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a 2 p.m. match against Cal State East Bay in University Gym.
