Golden Eagles Win A Top-10 Battle With Chico State

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's soccer team prevailed for the second straight week against a team ranked in the national top-10.

Last week, the Golden Eagles took down No. 7 Cal Poly Pomona in Pomona last Thursday and on Friday night at University Stadium, they took down No. 3 Chico State, 1-0, in a big California Collegiate Athletic Association match. No. 8 Cal State LA (11-1-1, 6-1 CCAA) won its fifth straight game - all by shutout - and maintained its two-point lead in the CCAA standings over second-place Cal State Monterey Bay.

The Golden Eagles handed Chico State (10-1-3, 3-1-3 CCAA) its first loss of the season.

The lone goal in the game came on a corner kick in the 28th minute. Jeppe Paulsen sent a beautiful ball into the box and the Golden Eagles essentially played ping-pong off the crossbar before Neophytos Scottis was able to get the ball just over the line for his first goal of the season. He was able to head the ball after a rebound from a header by Aidan Wait that also bounced off the crossbar.

It was a masterful defensive struggle between two of the top defensive teams in the country. Cal State LA recorded its 10th shutout of the season and the Golden Eagles scored only the sixth goal of the season against the Wildcats.

Cal State LA has only allowed four goals all season so Friday's matchup between national powers figured to be low-scoring - and it was.

Cal State LA had an 11-6 advantage in shots and a 6-3 edge in corner kicks, including a 5-2 margin in the first half.

Oliver Diaz had three shots for the Golden Eagles, while Bryan Ortega had two.

Julian Aadlandsvik made three saves in goal for the Golden Eagles.

Cal State LA will return to action on Sunday against Stanislaus State on Senior Day. The Golden Eagles will be honoring 13 student-athletes in pre-game ceremonies.
