CARSON -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team reached the halfway point of the California Collegiate Athletic Association in the same position they were in at the end of the 2022 season.
In first place.
The Golden Eagles, the defending CCAA and West Region champions, won their sixth straight match with a 25-13, 25-19, 25-22 victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills Friday night in the Torodome. Cal State LA (10-7, 8-1 CCAA), ranked 23rd in the nation in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association poll, maintained its one-game lead in the conference race.
Emily Elliott had a match-high 13 kills and hit at a .400 percentage, while
Iane Henke had 12 kills and one ace and hit at a .360 clip.
Bailey Fuches had nine kills and six assists for Cal State Dominguez Hills (8-8, 3-6 CCAA).
Jaden Grova had 14 set assists and two aces,
Eliza Cannon had two kills, two blocks and 10 set assists and
Brooke Paige had a match-high four service aces for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State LA had a 50-28 advantage in kills and outhit the Toros, .302-.084. Cal State LA also had a 5-3 edge in blocks and a 9-1 edge in service aces.
The Golden Eagles trailed 7-6 in the first set before taking control with an 8-0 run and assuming a 13-7 lead. Paige had a pair of aces during the run, while Henke had two kills and a block with
Matalasi Danielson. Cal State LA held a 20-13 lead before scoring the final five points of the set, including an ace by Paige and a block by Cannon and Danielson ending the frame.
The Golden Eagles trailed 9-7 in the second set, but took the lead for good with a 5-0 run behind Grova's serving. A kill by
Haley Roundtree, two kills by Danielson, an ace by Grova and a kill by Henke gave the Golden Eagles the 12-7 edge. The Toros were down, 19-15, before the Golden Eagles got back-to-back kills from Elliott, an attack error and an ace by Paige to take a 23-15 advantage. The Toros responded by slicing the deficit to 23-19 before a kill by Henke and an attack error gave the Golden Eagles the set.
Cal State LA opened up a 19-12 lead in the third set before the Toros rallied to get within 19-15. The Golden Eagles got kills from
Ashley Dittmann and Henke to stretch the lead back to 21-15. The Golden Eagles saw their lead cut to 23-21 before a kill by Elliott got them to match point at 24-21 and a kill by
Tehya Chadwick ended the contest.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday at home against Cal State Dominguez Hills at 3 p.m.
