Golden Eagles Give CCAA Leaders A Good Battle

SAN BERNARDINO -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team, coming off its exciting win over Cal Poly Pomona on Thursday, gave conference-leading Cal State San Bernardino a good battle on Saturday.

The Golden Eagles sliced a 23-point deficit down to single digits in the second half before ultimately falling, 92-80, in The Den. Cal State LA (7-7, 4-4 CCAA) shot nearly 60 percent in the second half while remaining within striking distance in the final 12 minutes.

Shane Bell, Alexander Sokol and Kyjuan Cannady all had 18 points to lead the Golden Eagles. Bell finished with 38 points in Cal State LA's two road games this week, while Sokol was 5-of-8 from 3-point range on Saturday and also had four steals. Cannady, meanwhile, recorded a career high with his 18 points in his best performance of the season.

Brandon Knapper led six players in double figures for Cal State San Bernardino (10-1, 5-0 CCAA). 

Payton Moore had 10 points, two rebounds and two assists for the Golden Eagles, while Jared Pearre had seven points, four rebounds and three assists.

Cal State LA shot 49 percent for the game (28-of-57) and was 19-of-32 in the second half. The Golden Eagles were 10-of-28 from 3-point range, including 7-of-16 in the second half. The Golden Eagles were 14-of-21 from the free-throw line. Cal State San Bernardino shot 52.4 percent for the game (33-of-63) and was 8-of-19 from 3-point range. The Yotes were 18-of-26 from the free-throw line, including 18-of-21 in the second half while holding off the Golden Eagles.

Cal State San Bernardino had a 45-19 rebounding edge, while Cal State LA committed 14 turnovers compared to 19 for Cal State San Bernardino.

The Yotes opened the game with a 3-pointer, which was quickly matched by Jaden Lazo. The Coyotes opened up a 21-5 lead before a 3-pointer by Bell stopped an 18-2 run. The Yotes led by as many as 22 points in the first half, but the Golden Eagles closed the half with a strong push and made it 39-26 after a layup by Lazo.

Cal State LA faced its largest deficit at 60-37 with 14 minutes left, but Bell hit a 3-pointer to start a 12-2 run that included baskets by Cannady, Sokol and Bell and a 3-pointer by Sokol that made it 62-49 with 11 minutes still to play. A 3-pointer by Cannady and two straight 3-pointers by Sokol got the Golden Eagles to within 10 points at 76-66 with 5:44 left and Cal State LA got within eight points at 86-78 after a 3-pointer by Sokol with 1:37 to go. 

Cal State LA, though, was unable to get any closer and the Yotes finished off the victory.

Cal State LA will return to action on Thursday with a road game at Cal Poly Humboldt.
