Golden Eagles Pick Up Big Home Win Over Toros

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team enjoyed its return home Thursday night and picked up a big California Collegiate Athletic Association win in its first game in University Gym in more than a month.

The Golden Eagles shot 50 percent from 3-point range and held off Cal State Dominguez Hills in a fast-paced contest, 80-77, in University Gym. Cal State LA (8-9, 5-6 CCAA) was especially hot in the second half, knocking down 9-of-15 attempts and shooting 50 percent overall. After trailing at halftime, 36-34, the Golden Eagles outscored the Toros, 46-41, in the second half. After the Toros closed to within 68-67 with 2:27 left, the Golden Eagles scored the next six points to take a 74-67 lead and held on from there.

Jaden Lazo scored 19 points to lead five Golden Eagles in double figures. Payton Moore had 16 points, seven rebounds and seven assists and Alexander Sokol had 15 points, five rebounds and three assists.

Cameron Barry had a game-high 23 points for Cal State Dominguez Hills (8-9, 4-7 CCAA), while Andre Ball had 14 points and eight rebounds and Jordan Hilstock had 12 points and four rebounds.

Dominic Escobar had 14 points and four rebounds, while Deuce Walker had 10 points, three rebounds and four assists. Jared Pearre had six points and nine rebounds.

Cal State LA shot 44.8 percent for the game (26-of-58) and was 14-of-28 from 3-point range. Cal State Dominguez Hills shot 42.4 percent (25-of-59) and was 8-of-23 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 14-of-23 from the free-throw line, while the Toros were 19-of-26. Cal State LA was out-rebounded, 40-34, and committed 11 turnovers to 14 for the Toros.

The Golden Eagles fell into a 22-12 hole after a 10-0 run by the Toros. Sokol stopped the run with a 3-pointer and another 3-pointer by Sokol cut the margin to 24-21 halfway through the first period. A basket by Sokol and an offensive rebound and basket by Moore tied the game at 30-30 and the game was tied again at 34-34 after a basket by Moore before the Toros got a late basket to take a 36-34 halftime lead.

The second half was extremely close throughout with neither team leading by more than six points. After the Toros took a 40-36 lead, Lazo hit back-to-back 3-pointers to give the Golden Eagles a 42-40 lead. A 3-pointer by Escobar pushed the lead to 45-41 and, after the Toros took a 46-45 lead, a 3-pointer by Walker put the Golden Eagles back up with 15 minutes to go.

Cal State LA took a 51-46 lead on a 3-pointer by Escobar, but the Toros scored the next seven points to take the lead. The Toros took a 58-54 lead before a 3-pointer by Moore and a three-point play by Lazo gave the Golden Eagles a 60-58 edge.

Cal State LA took a 68-62 after a 3-pointer by Moore with three minutes to go and, after the Toros pulled to within 68-67, Lazo hit a pair of free throws, Escobar made a layup and Walker hit a pair of free throws to give the Golden Eagles a 74-67 lead with one minute remaining. Cal State LA hit 6-of-8 free-throws in the final minute to secure the win.
