SAN FRANCISCO -- Cal State LA's volleyball team rebounded nicely from its first conference loss last Saturday with a big road win on Friday at San Francisco State.
The Golden Eagles got off to a strong start and won the first two sets before putting an emphatic ending to a 25-19, 25-17, 19-25, 25-13 California Collegiate Athletic Association victory in San Francisco State's Main Gym. Cal State LA (11-4, 6-1 CCAA) took over sole possession of second place in the conference with the victory.
Ayjah Landers led a balanced attack with 12 kills, while
Ashley Dittmann had 10 kills and seven digs.
Emily Elliott had eight kills and
Iane Henke had eight kills, three aces and a team-high 15 digs.
Tamiya Wilson had a match-high 15 kills for San Francisco State (7-7, 3-4 CCAA).
Jameson Sanders had 13 digs for the Golden Eagles, while
Eliza Cannon had 18 set assists and five digs.
San Francisco State had slight edges in kills (48-44) and blocks (7-6), but the Golden Eagles outhit the Gators, .274-.193. The biggest difference in the match came at the service line, where Cal State LA had eight aces and eight errors, while San Francisco State had four aces and 19 errors.
Cal State LA started well and broke open the first set late. Holding an 18-17 lead, the Golden Eagles went on a 6-0 run to get to set point. Henke served for five of those points, including an ace to make it 24-17. After the Gators saved a pair of set points, a kill by Dittmann ended the frame.
Cal State LA used a 7-0 run to erase a 9-8 deficit in the second set. Henke came up clutch again and served for six of those points. Dittmann had three kills during the run and
Haley Roundtree had one. An ace by Landers got the Golden Eagles to set point at 24-16 and a kill by Henke finished the set.
After dropping the third set, the Golden Eagles came on strong in the fourth frame. The Golden Eagles trailed early, 4-2, and the set was tied at 8-8 before a kill by Elliott and an ace by Elliott gave the Golden Eagles the lead for good. A kill by Henke gave the Golden Eagles a 17-10 lead and two more kills by Henke made it 19-11. Another strong serving run by Henke got the Golden Eagles to match point at 24-12 and a kill by Dittmann ended the match.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday at Cal State Monterey Bay in a match set to start at 2 p.m,.
