Golden Eagles Finish Tournament With A Sweep

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team completed a successful home tournament with another impressive sweep Saturday in University Gym.

Cal State LA, after dropping its opening match to Central Washington on Thursday, roared back to win its next three matches, all in three sets, after a 25-17, 25-19, 25-19 win over Biola in University Gym. Cal State LA (5-3) and Central Washington both went 3-1 in the tournament, while Cal State San Bernardino was 2-1.

In other matches on Saturday, Central Washington beat Biola, 3-0, Chaminade beat Seattle Pacific, 3-0, and Cal State San Bernardino beat Central Washington, 3-1, to conclude the tournament.

Iane Henke had 14 kills, two aces and eight digs for the Golden Eagles in their win over Biola, while Ashley Dittmann had 11 kills and a team-high 17 digs.

Anna Aubele had 11 kills and six digs for Biola (3-4).

Emily Elliott had seven kills and three blocks for the Golden Eagles, while Haley Roundtree had six kills and two blocks and Shelby Grubbs had five kills and two blocks. Eliza Cannon had 32 set assists, three kills and two service aces.

Cal State LA trailed only once, at 3-0, in the opening set. Cal State LA took the lead for good at 8-6 after a kill from Elliott and an ace from Brooke Paige and then broke open the set on a long serving run from Cannon that extended a 9-7 lead to 18-7. Cannon served for nine straight points after a kill by Henke got the Golden Eagles the serve. Cannon had a pair of aces during the run, while Henke had three kills.

The Golden Eagles moved out to a 21-9 lead after a kill by Grubbs and got to set point at 24-11 after a kill by Elliott. Biola fought off six set points before a kill by Dittmann closed it out at 25-17.

Cal State LA took a 3-0 lead in the second set and never trailed. Biola tied it at 4-4, but Cal State LA opened up a 10-5 lead after kills by Dittmann, Elliott and Henke and never looked back. Biola pulled to within 15-14 and 16-15, but Cal State LA responded each time. Cal State LA got to set point at 24-19 before closing things out on an attack error.

Henke had a kill and two service aces to open up a 3-0 lead for the Golden Eagles in the third set and took a 10-5 lead after a pair of kills from Roundtree and one from Henke. Three straight kills from Henke gave the Golden Eagles a 16-9 advantage and a kill by Roundtree put the Golden Eagles ahead, 20-12. Cal State LA maintained a consistent edge from there and closed out the match on a kill by Ayjah Landers.

Cal State LA will open California Collegiate Athletic Association on Friday at home against Stanislaus State.
