LOS ANGELES -- The battle for first place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association between Cal State LA's women's volleyball team and Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday was about as close as it gets.
The Golden Eagles, after falling into a 2-0 hole, roared back to force a fifth set, which wasn't settled until the final two points of a 30-28, 25-16, 17-25, 19-25, 15-13 Cal Poly Pomona victory. The Golden Eagles (10-4, 5-1 CCAA) had an eight-match winning streak snapped, while Cal Poly Pomona (12-1, 6-0 CCAA) won its 12th straight match and now sits alone atop the conference standings.
After the Broncos won an extended opening set, the next three sets weren't particularly close with the winning team jumping out to healthy leads in each frame. The fifth set, though, was extraordinarily tight. There were 12 ties and two lead changes. Neither team led by more than two points and the set was tied at 9-9, 10-10, 11-11, 12-12 and finally 13-13 before the Broncos captured the final two points for the victory.
And even that was close. At 13-13, the Golden Eagles thought they had a successful block of a Cal Poly Pomona attack, but, instead the ball was out to give the Broncos the 14-13 lead and the match ended on the next point.
Ayjah Landers had 19 points to lead four Golden Eagles in double figures, while
Iane Henke had 15 kills, four service aces and 13 digs.
Emily Elliott had 15 kills, three blocks and seven digs and
Ashley Dittmann had 10 kills and 13 digs.
Daisy Duke had 20 kills to lead Cal Poly Pomona, while Madison Novak had 15 kills and six blocks and Samantha Campion had 10 kills and eight digs. Caitie Mueller was also instrumental in the win with 35 set assists and four service aces. She had several strong serving runs to spark a Broncos advantage at the service line.
Eliza Cannon had 28 set assists, five kills and nine digs for the Golden Eagles, while
Jameson Sanders had 11 digs and an ace.
Shelby Grubbs had six kills and three blocks, while
Haley Roundtree had four kills and six blocks, including two solo.
Cal State LA had a 74-49 advantage in kills and a narrow .217-.207 edge in hitting percentage. Cal Poly Pomona had a 16-9 advantage in blocks and was very effective from the service line, producing 10 aces and only four errors to nine aces and 10 errors for the Golden Eagles.
The opening and closing sets were the most competitive of the match. Cal State LA had leads of 18-13 and 20-16 in the first set, but Cal Poly Pomona rallied and eventually tied it at 21-21. The Golden Eagles had set points at 24-23, 25-24, 27-26Â and 28-27, but the Broncos fought off each one and scored the final three points, including a key service ace by Avery Percival at 28-28 that got her team to set point.
Cal Poly Pomona surged out to a 20-13 lead in the second set and quickly took a 2-0, but then the match took a big swing.
Cal State LA took a 6-0 lead in the third set on a serving run by Henke that included three service aces and was never threatened. A kill by Grubbs gave the Golden Eagles a 23-16 lead and a kill by Henke and an attack error gave the Golden Eagles the set.
The Golden Eagles took leads of 17-11 and 21-14 in the fourth set and, after the Broncos closed to within 23-19, a kill by Grubbs and a service ace by
Brooke Paige sent the match into a fifth set.
Neither team took a two-point lead until the Broncos grabbed a 9-7 advantage after back-to-back kills by Duke. Cal State LA took the next two points to tie it at 9-9 after a kill by Landers and it went back-and-forth with the two teams siding out until Cal Poly Pomona got the final two points of the contest.
Cal State LA will return to action on Friday with a match at San Francisco State on Friday at 5 p.m.
