LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team picked up a monumental conference victory Friday night against defending California Collegiate Athletic Association champion Cal State San Bernardino.
The Golden Eagles won the first two sets and then closed out the match in four with a 25-19, 25-19, 16-25, 25-16 decision in University Gym. Cal State LA (10-3, 5-0 CCAA) own its eighth straight match and picked up its second straight win against No. 13 Cal State San Bernardino in the first meeting since the Golden Eagles beat the Yotes in an NCAA West Region semifinal last year in San Bernardino.
The Golden Eagles hadn't beaten Cal State San Bernardino in Los Angeles since Sept. 24, 2016.
Ayjah Landers had 12 kills to lead three Golden Eagles in double figures, while
Iane Henke had 11 kills and 14 digs and
Ashley Dittmann had 11 kills, four blocks and six digs.
Ashley Robinson had a match-high 15 kills to lead the Coyotes, while Savannah Hoffman had 10 kills. Makena Overbey had a match-high 28 digs.
Jaden Grova had 17 set assists and seven digs, while
Eliza Cannon had 16 set assists and 12 digs.
Jameson Sanders had a team-high 15 digs.
Cal State LA had a 49-43 edge in kills and a 9-8 advantage in blocks. The Golden Eagles hit at a .190 percentage and the Yotes hit at .164.
The Golden Eagles had seven aces, including three from Dittmann, and six errors. The Yotes had seven aces and 13 serving errors.
Cal State LA trailed early in the opening set, 7-4, before going on a 6-1 run to take the lead for good. A kill by
Shelby Grubbs gave the Golden Eagles a 10-8 lead. Cal State LA opened up a 15-10 lead after kills by
Emily Elliott and Dittmann and an attack error and the advantage grew to 18-11 after a kill by Dittmann and blocks by Dittmann and
Haley Roundtree and Roundtree and Elliott.
After the Yotes cut it to 18-16 and 19-17, the Golden Eagles scored four straight points to take command. Two kills by Landers, a block by Dittmann and Henke and an ace from Dittmann made it 23-17. A kill by Landers got the Golden Eagles to set point and an attack error ended it.
Cal State LA jumped out to a quick 7-2 lead in the second set. Back-to-back kills by Landers and a block by Dittmann and Roundtree sparked the run. An ace by Dittmann opened up a 10-4 advantage and Cal State LA used a 12-1 run to open up a 22-10 lead after a kill by Dittmann, an ace from Sanders, a kill by Roundtree, a kill by Henke and a block from Roundtree and Elliott.
Cal State San Bernardino, facing a set point at 24-14, scored five straight points to make it 24-19, but a kill by Landers ended the set.
After the Yotes bounced back in the third set, the Golden Eagles put the match away in the fourth. Cal State LA moved out to a 15-8 lead after an ace by Cannon and had an 18-10 advantage after a kill by Landers. Cal State LA got a kill by Henke, an attack error and a kill by Landers to get to match point at 24-15 and, after the Yotes saved one match point, a kill by Henke ended the contest.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday at 3 p.m. with a home match against Cal Poly Pomona in a contest between the two teams left in the conference with unbeaten CCAA marks.
