LOS ANGELES -- A new day made a world of difference for Cal State LA's women's volleyball team.
After dropping their opener in the Cal State LA Invitational on Thursday, the Golden Eagles responded with a pair of impressive three-set wins on Friday. Cal State LA started with a 25-21, 25-20, 25-15 win over Chaminade, the preseason favorite to win the PacWest Conference and followed that up with a 25-22, 25-20, 25-18 win over Seattle Pacific in the evening match.
The three other matches contested on Friday went five sets. Central Washington outlasted Chaminade, Seattle Pacific edged Biola and Biola outlasted California Collegiate Athletic Association favorite Cal State San Bernardino.
The tourney will conclude with four more matches on Saturday.
The Golden Eagles, coming off a tough four-set loss to Central Washington on Thursday, started quickly on Friday against Chaminade and never looked back.
Emily Elliott had 11 kills and a service ace to lead a balanced Cal State LA attack.
Iane Henke had nine kills and 13 digs, while
Shelby Grubbs had nine kills and seven blocks while hitting at a .667 percentage.
Ashley Dittmann also had seven kills.
Greta Corti had seven kills to lead Chaminade.
Eliza Cannon had 27 set assists and 11 digs for the Golden Eagles.
Jameson Sanders had 11 digs for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State LA had a 39-28 edge in kills and had a big 12-2 advantage in service aces. Henke and
Brooke Paige led the way with three aces each.
Cal State LA trailed in the first set, 15-14, before a five-point run put them ahead for good. A kill by
Haley Roundtree tied it up and Dittmann served the next four points, including a pair of aces. Chaminade got as close as 23-21, but a kill by Elliott and an attack error after a serve by
Jaden Grova closed out the set.
Cal State LA also trailed in the second set, 15-14, but used a 5-0 run to take the lead for good. This time, Paige had the serving honors and recorded a pair of aces.
Cal State LA got to set point at 24-19 and then ended the set on a kill by Elliott.
Cal State LA scored the first five points of the third set behind the serving of Henke and never trailed. Cal State LA moved out to a 22-14 lead and closed out the match on a pair of attack errors and a kill by Henke.
In the evening match, Dittmann had her best match of the season with 16 kills and a .448 hitting percentage. Elliott and Henke had 10 kills each.
Ashley Antoniak had seven kills to lead the Falcons.
Cannon had 30 set assists and also recorded seven kills on 15 swings. Henke added a team-high 13 digs and also had a pair of aces.
Cal State LA had a 50-28 edge in kills and hit at a .298 percentage to .184 for the Falcons.Â
The Golden Eagles scored the first seven points of the match and kept the pressure on the Falcons from the start. Henke had a pair of service aces, Dittmann had three kills and Elliott added two to get the Golden Eagles off to their quick start.
Seattle Pacific got as close as 16-14, but two straight kills by Cannon and a kill by Dittmann extended the lead to 19-14. Seattle Pacific got as close as two points again at 24-22, but a kill by Henke ended the set.
Cal State LA opened up an 11-3 lead in the second set off a strong serving run by
Jaden Grova and withstood some strong Seattle Pacific challenges. A kill by Henke got the Golden Eagles to set point at 24-18 and Henke closed out the set at 25-20 on a kill by Henke.
Seattle Pacific led early in the third set before Cal State LA took command. Cal State LA held just a 19-18 lead, but ran off the final six points to end the match. Cannon did the serving honors and a kill by Elliott and a block by Grubbs ended it.
Cal State LA will play in the third of four matches on Saturday, facing Biola at 3:30 p.m. Biola and Central Washington will kick things off at 10:30 a.m.
