Golden Eagles Remain Unbeaten In CCAA Play

HAYWARD -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team pulled out a tight win in the opening set of a California Collegiate Athletic Association match against Cal State East Bay and then roared on to an impressive victory.

The Golden Eagles knocked the Pioneers from the ranks of the unbeaten in conference play with a 30-28, 25-12, 25-17 win in Pioneer Gym. Cal State LA (9-3, 4-0 CCAA) won its seventh straight match while handing the Pioneers (10-2, 3-1 CCAA) their first conference loss and only their second defeat of the season. Cal State LA is one of just two teams remaining with unbeaten conference records.

Iane Henke had 10 kills, two aces and eight digs for the Golden Eagles, while Ayjah Landers had 10 kills, two aces and two blocks. Eliza Cannon had seven kills, 32 set assists, 11 digs and two blocks.

Kara Green had nine kills for Cal State East Bay.

Haley Roundtree had five kills in five swings for the Golden Eagles along with two blocks, while Shelby Grubbs had five kills in eight swings and a team-high four blocks. Jameson Sanders had 11 digs.

Cal State LA hit .301 in the match and was virtually unstoppable over the final two sets. After hitting .136 in the first set, the Golden Eagles hit .424 in the second set and .423 in the third. The Golden Eagles limited the Pioneers to just a .160 hitting percentage.

Cal State LA had a 45-33 advantage in kills, while Cal State East Bay had a 9-6 edge in blocks. Cal State LA had a big edge in serving, recording six aces and six errors to Cal State East Bay's one ace and eight errors.

The Golden Eagles used an impressive rally to turn things around in set. After trailing 8-4, 12-7 and 13-8, the Golden Eagles used a 6-0 run to get back into the frame. A service error, a block by Landers and Grubbs, a kill by Henke, a block by Grubbs, a kill by Sanders and an attack error gave the Golden Eagles a 14-13 lead.

Cal State LA fell behind again, 19-16, but clawed back and took its first set point at 24-23. The Golden Eagles then fought off two set points on kills by Landers and grabbed another set point at 28-27 after an ace by Landers. After Cal State East Bay tied it at 28-28, a kill by Dittmann and an attack error gave the Golden Eagles the set.

Cal State LA had just an 8-7 lead in the second set before going on a 17-5 run to close it out. The consecutive kills by Roundtree put the Golden Eagles ahead, 20-11, and Cal State LA scored the final five points of the set, including a block from Cannon and Roundtree, an ace by Dittmann and a kill by Roundtree.

The third set was close for awhile before Cal State LA put things away late. The Golden Eagles led 14-13 before taking control with a 6-1 run that gave them a 20-14 lead. Landers and Roundtree had a block, Dittmann had a kill, Landers had a kill and an ace and Cannon had a kill during the run.

The Golden Eagles closed out the match by scoring the final two points on kills by Cannon and Grubbs.

Cal State LA will return to action with a big home match against Cal State San Bernardino next Friday at 5 p.m.
