SAN MARCOS -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team took its winning act onto the road for the first time in conference play and enjoyed the results.
The Golden Eagles started quickly and held off a determined Cal State San Marcos effort in the third set of a 25-16, 25-19, 25-22 California Collegiate Athletic Association win Thursday night in The Sports Center. Cal State LA (8-3, 3-0 CCAA) won its sixth straight match and remained one of three unbeaten teams in conference play.
Ayjah Landers had nine killls, three aces and two blocks for the Golden Eagles, while
Iane Henke had nine kills, two aces, three blocks and eight digs.
Ashley Dittmann had eight kills, one ace and 12 digs.
Trinity Barr had eight kills to lead Cal State San Marcos (2-8, 1-2 CCAA).
Eliza Cannon had 22 set assists, two kills and five digs, while
Jameson Sanders had a team-high 15 digs.
Cal State LA had a 37-29 advantage in kills and outhit the Cougars, .184 - .099. The Golden Eagles had a 9-1 edge in service aces and both teams had four service errors. Cal State LA also had a 9-2 edge in blocks.
The Golden Eagles came roaring out of the gates and opened up a quick 10-2 lead. Henke started the match with a service ace and began a 4-0 run that included a kill from Landers, a block by
Shelby Grubbs and a block by Grubbs and Landers. A pair of aces by Landers and a kill by Dittmann gave the Golden Eagles their early 10-2 lead. The advantage stood at 14-5 after a block by
Haley Roundtree and Henke and the Golden Eagles kept a healthy lead the rest of the set. A block by Grubbs and Landers and a kill by Grubbs ended the frame.
Cal State LA trailed, 12-11, in the second set before a 4-0 run gave the Golden Eagles the lead. A service error tied the set and was followed by an attack error, a bad set and another attack error. The Cougars battled back to tie it at 16-16, but kills by Roundtree and Henke gave the Golden Eagles the lead. After the Cougars pulled to within 20-19, the Golden Eagles closed out the set with a 5-0 run. Kills by Roundtree and Henke started the run, which continued with a bad set and an attack error and concluded with a service ace from
Talia Niu.
Cal State LA trailed, 18-11 and 20-14Â in the final set before making a strong rally. An attack error, a service ace by Dittmann, a block by Roundtree and Henke, two kills from
Zuhal Cetin, a kill by
Jaden Grova, a service ace by
Brooke Paige, an attack error and a ball-handling error sparked Cal State LA to a 9-0 run and a 23-20. A kill by Henke made it 24-21 and a kill by Henke later ended the match.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday against one of the three unbeaten conference teams, Cal State East Bay, in Hayward at 1 p.m.
