LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team completed an impressive first week of California Collegiate Athletic Association play with a sweep over visiting Chico State Saturday afternoon in University Gym.
The Golden Eagles, much like they did in a conference-opening win over Stanislaus State on Friday, started quickly against the Wildcats and never let up in a 25-16, 25-16, 25-15 win in University Stadium. Cal State LA (7-3, 2-0 CCAA) won its fifth straight match. Chico State (2-7, 0-2 CCAA) dropped its fifth straight decision.
Iane Henke led a balanced Cal State LA attack with 11 kills and six digs, while
Ayjah Landers had nine kills and hit at a .615 percentage.
Haley Roundtree had six kills and five blocks, while
Ashley Dittmann had six kills and eight digs.
Zoe DiNardo had 11 kills to lead the Wildcats.
Eliza Cannon had 28 set assists and six digs for the Golden Eagles, while
Emily Elliott had five kills in the opening set.
Cal State LA had a 45-21 advantage in kills and outhit the Wildcats, .372-.034. The Golden Eagles had nine aces, including four from freshman
Jameson Sanders, while Chico State had three.
After Chico State scored the first point of the match, Cal State LA got kills from Elliott and Dittmann, an attack error and a service ace from Henke to take a 4-1 lead and never trailed again. Cal State LA opened up a 16-7 lead after a solo block from
Shelby Grubbs and opened up a 22-13 advantage after a service ace from
Brooke Paige. After the Wildcats closed to within 23-16, the Golden Eagles got kills from Grubbs and Landers to end the set.
Chico State led early, 6-4, in the second set, but a kill by Grubbs, an attack error and a kill by Henke gave Cal State LA the lead. Chico State scored the next two points to take its last lead at 8-7, but a kill by Landers, a block by Landers and Grubbs and an attack error gave the Golden Eagles the lead. Chico State fought back to tie it at 13-13 after back-to-back aces from Brooke Ono, but Cal State LA scored the next three points, including an ace from Landers, to take a 16-13 advantage.
Malia Apodaca served the Golden Eagles to set point after a kill by Cannon and two from Henke and, after Chico State saved one set point, Henke's kill ended the set.
The Golden Eagles fell behind early in the third set, 3-0, but a strong serving run by Sanders that included three aces sparked a 6-0 run that put the Golden Eagles ahead for good.
A kill by Landers, a block by Dittmann and
Rachel Lowe, a solo block by Lowe and a kill by Dittmann extended the lead to 20-10. Chico State battled back to make it 21-15, but kills by Landers and Henke and two kills from
Zuhal Cetin ended the contest.
Cal State LA will return to action next Thursday at 5 p.m. at Cal State San Marcos.
