Golden Eagles Fall Short In Tournament Opener

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team had a tough result in its first home match of the 2022 season.

The Golden Eagles took the opening set, but Central Washibgton roared back to take a 22-25, 25-10, 25-12, 25-23 decision in the opening match of the Cal State LA Invitational in University Gym. Cal State LA (2-3) had a chance to extend the match to a fifth set, but was unable to hold onto a 21-17 lead in the final frame.

In the second match of the evening, Cal State San Bernardino rallied for a 25-23, 14-25, 22-25, 25-23, 15-8 win over Seattle Pacific.

Cal State LA got 11 kills each from Emily Elliott and Iane Henke against Central Washington, while Haley Roundtree had nine kills and three blocks. Elliott also had a team-high 13 digs.

Central Washington (3-2) got a match-high 13 and 12 digs from Kylie Thorne and nine kills each from Ashley Kaufman and Marianna Payne.

Eliza Cannon had 30 set assists and seven digs for the Golden Eagles.

Central Washington had a 47-42 edge in kills and hit at a .266 percentage to .095 for the Golden Eagles. The Wildcats also had nine service aces with six errors to five aces and seven errors for the Golden Eagles. Central Washington also had a 10-8 edge in blocks.

It was an up and down match for the Golden Eagles, who started well, but really struggled in the second and third sets before having a legitimate chance to force a fifth set. Central Washington, though, had other plans.

Cal State LA broke a 21-21 tie late in the first set on a kill by Roundtree, a block by Roundtree and Ashley Dittmann and a block by Roundtree. Central Washington staved off one set point on a kill by Kylie Thorne, but a kill by Dittman closed out the set.

Central Washington dominated the next two sets, but Cal State LA fought back nicely in the fourth set. The Golden Eagles moved out to a 21-17 lead after a kill by Ayjah Landers, but Central Washington never wavered. Cal State LA took a 23-21 lead after a kill by Henke, but Central Washington scored the next four points to close out the match.

Tournament action begins on Friday morning at 9:30 a.m. with Central Washington facing Chaminade. Cal State LA will play twice, once at 2:30 p.m. against Chaminade and again at 7:30 p.m. against Seattle Pacific.
