Golden Eagles Beat Toros For Third Win In A Row

CARSON -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team showed off some incredible balance Thursday night while beating Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Lily Buggs led five players in double figures and the Golden Eagles were impressive in a 80-69 California Collegiate Athletic Association victory over the Toros in the Torodome. Cal State LA (8-9, 7-5 CCAA) won its third straight game and also snapped a five-game winning streak by Cal State Dominguez Hills (9-8, 7-5 CCAA). The Golden Eagles and Toros are tied for fourth place in the conference, just one game back of third-place Stanislaus State with seven conference games remaining. The top six teams will qualify for the CCAA Tournament.

Cal State LA completed a regular-season sweep of the Toros with the victory.

Buggs had another strong game for the Golden Eagles with 20 points and 12 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season. 

Raya Smith had a season-high 16 points in the best game of her first season with the program. She also had a pair of assists and three steals. Yesenia Smith also had 11 points and also hit three 3-pointers for the second straight game.

Jada Johnson had 10 points and six rebounds and Anai Washington had 10 points and five assists for the Golden Eagles.

Asia Jordan had 16 points and Hosanna Walker had 14 points for the Toros.

Nicole Flennaugh poured in nine points, all in the second half, and hit three 3-pointers, for the Golden Eagles.

Cal State LA shot 41.7 percent for the game (30-of-72) and was 7-of-21 from 3-point range. Cal State Dominguez Hills shot 38.2 percent for the game (26-of-68) and was just 4-of-28 from 3-point range. Cal State LA was 13-of-18 from the free-throw line, while Cal State Dominguez Hills was 13-of-19. 

Cal State LA was out-rebounded, 45-40, but won the turnover battle, committing 19 and forcing 25.

The Golden Eagles trailed for much of the first quarter before a 7-0 run started by a 3-pointer by Yesenia Smith and four straight points from Buggs gave them a 20-16 lead after one quarter.

Cal State Dominguez Hills opened the second quarter with a 12-4 run to open up a 28-24, but Cal State LA went on a 10-0 run to grab the lead for good. Buggs hit a pair of free throws and Raya Smith scored four straight points to give the Golden Eagles the lead and four straight points from Johnson finished the run.

Cal State LA got four more points from Buggs, who had 16 points in the first half, to take a 42-31 halftime lead.

Flennaugh hit a 3-pointer to open the third quarter and Yesenia Smith scored eight straight points, six coming via 3-pointers, to open up a 64-45 lead and Cal State LA had a healthy 64-48 lead entering the fourth period.

The Golden Eagles matched their biggest lead after Roya Smith hit a 3-pointer to open the period and they held double-digit leads the rest of the way. Cal State Dominguez Hills made a run to close it to 67-56, but Roya Smith got a three-point play to stop the surge, Flennaugh hit a 3-pointer to boost the lead back to 74-58 and a layup by Flennaugh made it 78-62. Smith scored Cal State LA's final points to make it 80-62 with 1:37 to go.

Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a game at second-place Cal State East Bay at 1 p.m.
